2025 Cricket Landscape: All Eyes on the Future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma

As the Indian men’s cricket team wraps up 2024, they will be eager to kick off 2025 with a strong performance against Australia in the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. The upcoming year is packed with significant tournaments for India, starting with the ICC Champions Trophy in February. Following that, the team will prepare for the World Test Championship final and an important Test series in England.

The focus will also be on the future of star players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in Test cricket, as both have faced challenges in recent matches. With India currently trailing 1-2 in the series against Australia, fans and experts are speculating about the potential for changes in the team lineup if they don’t make it to the World Test Championship final.

Former coach Ravi Shastri believes Kohli still has a lot to contribute, while discussions suggest that pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah might take over the captaincy. This could mean that for one of these senior players, 2025 might mark the end of their Test careers. However, crucial decisions will be made after careful consideration, especially with a challenging five-match Test tour in England scheduled for August. India would likely prefer not to field an inexperienced batting lineup in such an important series.

### ICC Champions Trophy: A Chance for Redemption

After the Test series, the attention will shift to the ICC Champions Trophy, where India will be eager to secure an ODI title after their near miss in the 2023 World Cup on home ground. Kohli and Rohit will again be pivotal as India heads into the tournament as favorites. Since the last World Cup, they have only participated in one ODI series against Sri Lanka in August 2024. Rohit displayed solid form during that series, while Kohli’s performance raised some concerns.

If India fails to clinch the Champions Trophy, it could spark discussions regarding the future of both players. They may aim to continue through the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, but much will depend on their current form and the support they receive from the team’s management. The exit of veteran player Ravichandran Ashwin from the squad hints at potential retirements ahead if the team doesn’t improve.

### T20I Team: New Faces, Same Goals

In T20 cricket, the team is already undergoing a shift as Kohli and Rohit have stepped back from this format post the 2024 World Cup. Emerging players like Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, Abhishek Sharma, and Arshdeep Singh are stepping into the spotlight, embodying the aggressive playing style promoted by the management.

Suryakumar Yadav is now leading this youthful squad as they prepare to defend their title in the T20 World Cup set for 2026 on home soil. With several key developments anticipated in 2025, Indian cricket fans are hopeful for another ICC trophy and the positive evolution of the team, even as they prepare to say goodbye to some familiar faces.
