Pep Guardiola: Haaland Will Shine if Manchester City Elevates Their Game

Pep Guardiola is backing his star striker, Erling Haaland, as Manchester City aims to boost its performance. The team is currently experiencing a tough time, managing just one win in their last 11 matches across all competitions. This situation is a significant shift from the usual success we associate with Guardiola’s coaching.

Haaland, who has been known for his remarkable goal-scoring since joining the team, has faced challenges lately, managing only one goal in his last five appearances. He has often found himself without enough support, facing multiple defenders alone. Despite this, Guardiola is not considering switching to a false nine formation that has worked well in the past.

“I would rather play with Erling,” Guardiola stated before City’s upcoming match against Aston Villa. He emphasized the importance of adapting to Haaland’s strengths and ensuring he can contribute more.

Guardiola explained that Haaland’s current scoring struggles are due to the overall team performance, not a lack of skill or effort from Haaland himself. “Our situation impacts his productivity,” he shared. “We’re not creating enough scoring opportunities. When he’s surrounded by several opponents, it becomes difficult for him. We need to enhance our teamwork to help create the spaces he needs to excel.”

As the team faces these challenges, Guardiola also hinted at the possibility of making some strategic additions in the January transfer window. This marks a shift from their usual approach of being cautious about mid-season signings.

“We have discussed the need for perhaps bringing in someone,” Guardiola revealed, adding that any new acquisitions should have a long-term purpose, not just for a short-term boost. He recalled the signing of Aymeric Laporte in January 2018 as a rare move for the club, recognizing that making significant transfers in the middle of the season can be tricky, with other teams reluctant to sell and prices often inflated.

Another concern for City is the ongoing investigation into alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules. Guardiola expressed uncertainty about how this situation may affect their recruitment plans.

As City prepares for its match at Villa Park, the focus remains on finding a way to turn their season around. Guardiola’s trust in Haaland and his commitment to improving the team’s overall game will be crucial in navigating these challenging times.
