Cole Palmer shone brightly once again as he helped Chelsea achieve a thrilling 4-3 comeback victory against Tottenham Hotspur, breaking two significant records in the process. Palmer is now the Premier League’s leading penalty taker, with a perfect record of 12 successful penalties.
The match got off to an exciting start, with Tottenham jumping ahead to a 2-0 lead in just the first 11 minutes. Former Chelsea player Dominic Solanke opened the scoring, followed closely by Dejan Kulusevski, who capitalized on mistakes made by Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella.
However, Chelsea responded quickly. Jadon Sancho brought the team back into the game with a fantastic goal in the 17th minute, giving the visitors a glimmer of hope before halftime.
As the second half unfolded, it was evident that Chelsea was determined to turn the game around. They were awarded a penalty in the 60th minute when Yves Bissouma fouled Moises Caicedo. Palmer stepped up and calmly slotted the ball into the net, bringing the score to 2-2.
Chelsea took the lead in the 73rd minute, with Enzo Fernández scoring a powerful goal after a slick assist from Palmer. Palmer then secured his brace by converting another penalty in the 84th minute, this time softly chipping the ball over the goalkeeper with remarkable poise.
With his perfect record, Palmer set a new Premier League benchmark for penalties, while also breaking Chelsea legend Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s record for the most goal contributions in a calendar year, achieving 39.
Football expert Jamie Carragher praised Palmer’s performance on Sky Sports, describing him as “coolness personified” and highlighting his transformative effect on Chelsea.
Tottenham’s Son Heung-min managed to score a goal in stoppage time, but it didn’t change the outcome, leaving Spurs with their second defeat of the week and placing them at 11th in the league with 20 points.
With this decisive win, Chelsea climbed to second place in the Premier League, now just four points behind leaders Liverpool. The team showcased their resilience and skill, taking a significant step in their pursuit of the title.
