MI Captain Defends Decision on Bumrah’s First Over: ‘It’s Not Hardik’s Dilemma’

Mumbai Indians Claim Victorious Comeback with Dominant Win

After a tough streak of four losses, the Mumbai Indians celebrated a much-needed victory, leaving skipper Hardik Pandya feeling relieved. Addressing the media, Pandya tackled the ongoing debate regarding the limited use of star bowler Jasprit Bumrah with the new ball in IPL 2026.

Some fans had been questioning why Bumrah wasn’t bowling the first over earlier this season. In response, Pandya remarked, “It’s interesting to see so many asking about Jassi not being bowled early. But he’s only bowled the first over seven or eight times in about 140 games. So it’s not just my decision; it’s a broader issue.”

The comments came after Mumbai’s impressive win against the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad. In a breakthrough performance, Bumrah took a wicket on the very first ball of the match, dismissing Sai Sudharsan. This early wicket set a challenging tone for Gujarat, who ultimately fell for just 100 runs in 15.5 overs, handing Mumbai a substantial 99-run victory.

Despite starting the season slowly, Bumrah showed his classic form with figures of 3 overs, 15 runs, and 1 wicket. Though not making headlines, his performance was key to Mumbai’s strong showing. With Mumbai posting a total of 199 for five, Pandya’s decision to open with Bumrah was spot on.

Interestingly, this was only the seventh time in Bumrah’s IPL career that he began the bowling, reinforcing Pandya’s point that strategy is adaptable to the situation. This win marked Mumbai’s first victory against the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad, breaking a previous losing streak.

The backbone of Mumbai’s success was the remarkable performance from Tilak Varma, who scored his first IPL century with an impressive 101 runs off just 45 balls, clinching the milestone with a boundary on the last ball. Varma had a slow start, but a pep talk from Pandya changed the game for him.

“I reassured Tilak that he has immense talent, and he just needs to focus on the ball. It was crucial for him and for our team,” Pandya explained.

This victory in Ahmedabad could be pivotal for Mumbai’s campaign. “Winning away is always tough, especially here. This result feels special and hopefully signals the start of a turnaround for us,” Pandya added.

On the flip side, Gujarat Titans had a night to forget. Captain Shubman Gill expressed frustration over losing control during the middle overs, allowing too many runs late in the game.

“We let too many runs slip in the middle stages. On a pitch like this, a score between 160 and 170 was achievable,” Gill commented, acknowledging inconsistencies in their bowling.

He also critiqued the batting performance despite the favorable conditions. “We could have done better. This is just a small setback. We have more matches ahead and hope to return to winning ways,” he said.

With this decisive win, the Mumbai Indians look forward to regrouping and building momentum in the remainder of the season.
