New Delhi: Rajya Sabha Session Adjourned Amid Opposition Protests
On Monday, the proceedings in the Rajya Sabha were paused until 12 noon due to disruptions caused by opposition parties. They raised various issues, including serious allegations of bribery against the Adani group and incidents of violence in Sambhal district, Uttar Pradesh.
Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar rejected 20 notices under Rule 267, which included eight requests linked to a US indictment. This indictment claims that the Adani group paid $265 million in bribes to win contracts for solar power supply, according to reports.
Dhankhar pointed out that the ongoing disturbances in Parliament were reminiscent of Murphy’s Law, which suggests that “anything that can go wrong will go wrong.” He expressed worries that the frequent adjournments since the Winter Session began on December 25 were hindering the effective functioning of Parliament.
The Chairman urged opposition members to allow the House to focus on its planned agenda, but they continued to stand in protest, insisting their issues be addressed. Dhankhar plead with them, saying, "Don’t make it dysfunctional."
As the opposition held their ground, the session was adjourned until noon.
Members of the Congress sought to discuss the Adani bribery allegations, while those from the Samajwadi Party submitted notices regarding law enforcement issues in Sambhal. Other topics brought up included ongoing violence in Manipur, rising crime rates in Delhi, attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh, and the need for special support for flood-affected areas in Wayanad, Kerala.
The Adani group has dismissed the accusations from the US indictment, branding them as unfounded.
