Prime Minister Warns Against Digital Fraud and Cyber Threats

On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised alarms about the risks that come with digital fraud, cybercrimes, and advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). He particularly highlighted the concerns about deepfake technology, which poses a threat to personal relationships and community trust.

Speaking at the closing session of the 59th All India Conference of Director Generals and Inspector Generals of Police, Modi stressed the need for law enforcement to leverage technology to lessen their burdens. He proposed that police stations should become central hubs for resource management.

The conference tackled various pressing security issues, including challenges along India’s borders with Bangladesh and Myanmar, urban policing trends, and effective strategies against misinformation, as noted in an official statement.

Discussions also centered on a range of national security challenges, such as terrorism, civil unrest, cyber threats, economic stability, immigration concerns, coastal defense, and drug trafficking. Modi expressed contentment with the strategies developed during the conference to address these issues.

To combat the threats posed by digital crime and new AI technologies, Modi urged police leaders to transform these challenges into opportunities. He also commended the advancements in urban policing, suggesting that successful initiatives should be implemented in 100 cities across the nation.

Modi expanded on his vision for SMART policing, which stands for Strategic, Meticulous, Adaptable, Reliable, and Transparent. This concept, which he first introduced in 2014, aims to modernize Indian policing to be more effective in serving communities.

The conference also reviewed new criminal laws and effective police practices, as well as the security situation in neighboring regions. Highlighting the success of hackathons in addressing significant issues, Modi recommended organizing a national police hackathon.

He further emphasized the importance of port security and called for a strategic approach to future planning in this area. Remembering Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s contributions to India’s internal security, Modi encouraged the entire security establishment to honor his legacy on his 150th birth anniversary by setting goals to enhance police professionalism and public image.

Additionally, Modi laid out a future roadmap for the police to align with the vision of a developed India. The conference saw about 250 top-ranking officers participating in person, while over 750 joined virtually, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

Since taking office in 2014, Modi has shown consistent interest in these conferences, which feature open discussions among police leaders on major security and policing topics. This ongoing dialogue has fostered a cooperative atmosphere among officials from various law enforcement agencies.

Previously, these annual meetings were held in New Delhi, but since 2014, locations have varied across the country — including cities like Guwahati, Kutch, Hyderabad, and Pune, with this year’s event taking place in Bhubaneswar. As the scope of discussions has broadened, the conferences now address both national security and core policing issues.

Prior to 2014, meetings were concentrated on national security, but they have since evolved to also consider crime prevention, community policing, and enhancing the police’s reputation. This change has allowed officers to bond and collaborate more effectively over the course of the multiday event.

The direct engagement between top police officials and the Prime Minister has encouraged shared insights on critical challenges and led to practical solutions. Topics for each conference are chosen after thorough consultations with senior police leaders, ensuring that numerous voices and ideas are included in the discussions.

There has been a notable shift toward following up on previous conference recommendations, now a standard practice aimed at tracking progress on action points initiated in past meetings. This approach has yielded significant policy changes that have improved policing standards in both urban and rural areas, redefining efficient policing practices based on new benchmarks.
