Discovery of Largest Gold Deposit in China
A significant gold deposit, believed to be the largest in the world, has recently been unearthed in China, as reported by the state-funded Xinhua news agency. The newly discovered gold reserves are valued at 600 billion yuan, equivalent to approximately $83 billion US dollars.
Geologists from the Hunan Provincial Geological Institute made this remarkable find in Pingjiang County, approximately 12 miles underground. This site, known as the Wangu goldfield, contains 40 gold ore veins and a total of 300.2 tons of gold resources.
The Hunan Academy of Geology predicts that there could be more than 1,000 tons of gold reserves located at depths over 3,000 meters.
In 2023, China maintained its status as the leading gold producer globally, contributing around 10% of the world’s gold output, according to the World Gold Council.
Previously, the world’s largest gold reserve was held by the South Deep gold mine in Gauteng Province, South Africa, which has about 930 metric tons of gold.
Gold prices have been on the rise, with futures prices increasing by more than 32% so far this year and over 38% in the past 12 months, reaching new record highs. Currently, the price for one ounce of gold is nearly $2,674.
In light of geopolitical tensions, including conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, along with uncertainties surrounding U.S. economic policies and the Federal Reserve’s plans on interest rates, investors are increasingly turning to gold as a safe investment option.
