Russian Troops Detain Ex-British Soldier Battling for Ukraine in Kursk, Says Report

Former British Soldier Captured by Russian Forces While Fighting for Ukraine

Reports indicate that Russian forces have taken custody of a former British Army soldier, 22-year-old James Scott Rhys Anderson, who was engaged in combat alongside Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region. Videos circulated online show Anderson sitting restrained while he provides his identity to Russian authorities.

Russia’s Tass news agency confirmed the capture, with Anderson stating that he served in the British Army as a signalman from 2019 to 2023. He expressed regret about his decision to fight for Ukraine, admitting that he has lost nearly everything.

"I had just lost everything," Anderson said, explaining that he was dismissed from his job after leaving the military. With his father imprisoned, he sought purpose by joining the International Legion for the Defense of Ukraine, saying, "It was a stupid idea."

Established at the request of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy following Russia’s full-blown invasion in February 2022, the International Legion largely comprises foreign volunteers. Anderson reportedly worked as an instructor for Ukrainian soldiers, but he claims he was forcibly sent to the front lines in the Kursk area after his commander took his belongings, including his passport and phone.

"I don’t want to be here," Anderson stressed in the recorded footage.

If verified, this incident could mark one of the first public cases of a Western national being captured on Russian soil while supporting Ukraine. The U.K. Embassy in Moscow confirmed they are in touch with Anderson’s family but has not disclosed further details about his situation.

Scott Anderson, James’ father, shared that he was informed of his son’s capture by the Ukrainian commander. He expressed his worries about his son’s safety, fearing he could be tortured while in captivity.

The younger Anderson recounted his journey to Ukraine, detailing how he traveled from London to Poland before entering Ukraine. His capture came amid reports of Russia recruiting foreign fighters, notably from Yemen, through deceptive means in collaboration with the Houthi network.

A senior Ukrainian defense official mentioned that Russia is increasingly seeking to involve foreign mercenaries in its ongoing conflict against Ukraine.

As the conflict continues to escalate, Anderson’s situation highlights the complex and perilous nature of the fighting in Ukraine.
