Imtiaz Ali Responds to Vinta Nanda’s Critique on Women’s Safety at IFFI

Veteran television producer Vinta Nanda recently criticized filmmaker Imtiaz Ali regarding his comments on women’s safety at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. Imtiaz has responded to the backlash, clarifying that his remarks were misunderstood. He stressed that he does not deny the numerous cases of harassment, expressing the need to address such incidents seriously.

In his Instagram stories, Imtiaz explained, “It seems there has been a misunderstanding. I’ve never denied the countless cases of harassment that Vinta ji and others have brought up. These situations are very troubling and need to be confronted consistently.”

He further expressed his frustration that the entire film industry, filled with many respectful individuals, often faces negative attention due to the actions of a few. “Terrible incidents have occurred, and we must adopt a zero-tolerance stance against them as a community,” he added.

Imtiaz recalled an experience on the set of his film Jab We Met, mentioning how actress Kareena Kapoor felt secure while filming. “Kareena was on the top berth in a train compartment, preparing for a scene. When we needed extra lights, I asked her to come down for safety, but she said she felt fine and that the crew could continue working around her,” he shared.

Nanda, however, responded to Imtiaz’s remarks, highlighting that his perspective might not reflect the experiences of many women in the industry. In a post on Instagram, she said, “Imtiaz Ali should refrain from commenting on what women endure in the entertainment world. Just because Kareena feels safe doesn’t mean all women do. Does he not know about the existence of the casting couch?”

She concluded her post by suggesting that men like him should avoid discussing topics they have no real experience with, indicating that genuine change requires understanding and honesty.

The conversation highlights an ongoing dialogue in the industry about creating a safer environment for women and the importance of understanding diverse experiences.
