Suspicious Package Outside U.S. Embassy in London Identified as Hoax
LONDON: British police reported on Friday that a suspicious package found outside the U.S. embassy in London was determined to be a hoax device after a controlled explosion was carried out.
Authorities quickly responded by cordoning off areas around the embassy, which is a prominent 12-story glass building located in Nine Elms, south London. Following the explosion, normal operations at the embassy resumed.
“The initial findings suggest the item was not a real threat,” stated the Metropolitan Police of London. They noted that an investigation would now take place. While most of the police presence has been reduced, some cordons will remain in effect for the time being.
The embassy informed that, although it had returned to regular operations, all public appointments scheduled for Friday were cancelled due to the incident. They added that local authorities had thoroughly investigated and cleared the suspicious package.
The U.S. embassy moved to its current location in Nine Elms in 2018, transitioning from its previous site in Mayfair to enhance safety and security. This area, once industrial, has been transformed into a vibrant neighborhood with upscale apartments and is located near the iconic Battersea Power Station, a historic building from the 1930s that has been repurposed into a shopping and tourist destination.
