Russian Forces Target Ukraine’s Energy Infrastructure
On Sunday, Russian military units launched an extensive attack on Ukraine, firing hundreds of drones and missiles aimed at the country’s energy and power facilities. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that the assault involved at least 120 missiles and 90 drones, many of which were Iranian-made Shahed drones. This attack marks the largest long-range offensive from Russia in three months.
Zelenskyy emphasized the attack’s focus on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, revealing that there were damages from both direct hits and debris. In Mykolaiv, two individuals lost their lives and six others, including two children, were injured due to the drone strikes.
Despite the extensive assault, Zelenskyy stated that Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 144 of the incoming threats before they could reach their intended targets.
Explosions were reported in several cities, including Kyiv, Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, Kryvyi Rih, and Dnipro, with reports indicating that Odesa, a key port city, experienced a power outage as a result.
In response to the heightened threat, Poland scrambled its air force, although there were no reports of Russian missiles landing within Polish borders.
As temperatures drop in Ukraine, Russia has consistently targeted the country’s energy infrastructure, continuing a strategy that has been seen in previous winter months during the ongoing conflict.
Meanwhile, the situation unfolds alongside the anticipation of President-elect Donald Trump’s forthcoming appointment of a peace envoy to facilitate negotiations to end the war with Russia. Trump has hinted at his ability to broker peace between Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin, although specific strategies remain unclear.
Advisers close to Trump are reportedly suggesting a framework that could involve a demilitarized zone and allowing Russia to retain control over certain territories it has occupied, sparking a debate over concessions to Russia and Ukraine’s pursuit of NATO membership.
The ongoing conflict and the recent wave of attacks underscore the dire situation in Ukraine as the winter season approaches.
