Exciting Progress on Breast Cancer Vaccine from Cleveland Clinic
Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic have made promising strides toward a vaccine for breast cancer, particularly for a challenging type known as triple-negative breast cancer. This significant update was shared at a recent conference hosted by the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer in Texas.
Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is known for being aggressive, often growing and spreading quickly, which makes it harder to treat, according to the American Cancer Society.
Dr. G. Thomas Budd, who leads the study at the Cleveland Clinic Cancer Institute, stated that this vaccine is designed to prevent TNBC from developing. It is the first of its kind to target this goal directly.
The vaccine includes a protein called α-lactalbumin, found in breast tissue that typically aids in lactation. Notably, this protein is no longer produced in significant amounts after a woman has gone through menopause. Dr. Budd explained that this approach makes sense since most breast cancers occur in women over 40, most of whom are no longer breastfeeding.
This protein was chosen because it is hardly found in normal, aging breast tissues but is present in more than 70% of all triple-negative breast cancers. Dr. Budd commented, “The investigational vaccine represents a potential new way to combat breast cancer."
The Phase 1 trial results have been positive so far. The vaccine was generally well-tolerated among participants and successfully triggered an immune response in most cases. The trial, which included 26 patients, also helped researchers understand the vaccine’s side effects and the highest safe dosage.
This development follows nearly two decades of research by the late Dr. Vincent Tuohy at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute. A Phase 2 study is expected to launch next year to further assess the vaccine’s effectiveness.
Dr. Nicole Saphier, a medical contributor, described the vaccine’s development as groundbreaking. She emphasized that it signifies a shift in cancer care, moving from treatment to prevention.
Looking ahead, successful vaccines could reduce the number of breast cancer cases significantly, helping to save lives and lessen the emotional and financial burdens on families affected by cancer. Moreover, the potential benefits extend beyond high-risk individuals, offering broader public health advantages.
