Hero Dog Award Goes to North Carolina’s Law Enforcement Star, Bo
The Hero Dog Award, presented by American Humane, has recognized a remarkable canine for its annual ceremony. This year’s winner is Bo, a lovable bloodhound who serves with the Gastonia Police Department in North Carolina.
The Hero Dog Awards aim to highlight the exceptional contributions made by dogs in various fields, including law enforcement, therapy, and service. American Humane, the first national organization dedicated to animal welfare since its founding in 1877, announced the finalists for this prestigious award earlier in the year.
Hundreds of dog owners from across the nation entered their pets into the competition, celebrating the important roles dogs play in society. Bo, just 18 months old, has quickly proven himself as a lifeline in his community.
He started his law enforcement journey at only eight months old, after being chosen from a litter by the Gastonia Police Department. Bo was taken in by Sgt. David Rowland, who helped him train and bond. Interestingly, Bo is the first bloodhound to join the department, which has traditionally used German shepherds for police work.
Bo is not only known for his skills but also for his gentle nature. Though he gets scared by Halloween decorations, he has earned the nickname "gentle giant" among those who know him. His unique ability to approach and comfort individuals he tracks makes him an invaluable asset to the police department.
Since beginning his career, Bo has helped locate several missing people, including an 11-year-old child with autism, a 7-year-old kidnapping victim, and many lost senior citizens.
Sgt. Rowland expressed his pride in Bo’s accomplishments, stating that the award is a significant honor for both the dog and the police department. He emphasized the emotional impact Bo has on families, reuniting them with loved ones after difficult situations.
American Humane’s president, Robin Ganzert, praised Bo’s achievements, noting that he has done more in his young life than many dogs do in their entire careers. As part of his duties, Bo provides comfort and companionship, offering love and support to those in need.
The finalists for the Hero Dog Award will be recognized at a gala in Palm Beach, Florida, this November, where they will celebrate their contributions with a fun and festive red carpet event.
