Thousands of Indian Americans Sign Up for PM Modi’s New York Appearance on September 22nd

Over 24,000 Indian-Americans have enthusiastically registered for a monumental community gathering in New York, where Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is slated to address the diaspora on September 22. The event, dubbed "Modi & US: Progress Together," will take place at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Long Island, a venue that accommodates a mere 15,000 seats. Yet, despite this constraint, the fervor among the Indian-American community has eclipsed all expectations, with an avalanche of registrations pouring in from across the nation via 590 community organizations, affectionately labeled as "Welcome Partners."

This gathering marks Modi’s much-anticipated return to the Indian-American community in New York, a full decade after his unforgettable speech at Madison Square Garden in 2014—the very speech that took place only months into his first term as Prime Minister. That earlier event became a catalyst, strengthening the bonds between Modi’s government and the Indian diaspora within the United States. As anticipation builds for his next address, organizers are scrambling to adapt to the unprecedented interest, implementing adjustments to seating arrangements and collaborating with Welcome Partners to facilitate maximum attendance.

The "Modi & US" event is not simply a political discourse; it is a vibrant celebration of the multifaceted diversity, resilience, and success of the Indian-American community. Participants will encompass a dazzling array of religious and linguistic backgrounds—including Jewish, Zoroastrian, Christian, Sikh, Muslim, and Hindu voices— and speakers of Hindi, Telugu, Punjabi, Tamil, and beyond. Besides Modi’s keynote address, the gathering promises an array of cultural performances and the participation of influential Indian-American figures from various sectors like business, science, and the arts, all of which will underscore the community’s vast contributions to both India and the US.

Organized by the Indo-American Community of USA (IACU), this event has been highlighted as pivotal in fortifying the robust ties between the Indian government and its overseas citizens. A spokesperson from IACU expressed, “We are wholeheartedly dedicated to ensuring this event is as inclusive as possible. The response has been nothing short of overwhelming, particularly from the tri-state area, and we are diligently working to welcome everyone who wishes to partake in this historic occasion.”

Modi’s arrival in New York coincides with the upcoming high-level session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where he is expected to deliver a vital speech on September 26. This will mark his fifth address to the Indian diaspora in the US, following memorable events, including the electrifying "Howdy Modi" rally in Houston in 2019, where he shared the stage with then-President Donald Trump.

During the UN General Assembly, which celebrates its 79th session of high-level debate this year, Modi’s address will center on themes of global collaboration and the trajectory of international diplomacy. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has convened this year’s assembly under the banner of adopting the Pact for the Future, a groundbreaking agreement aimed at bolstering global digital cooperation and safeguarding the prospects of coming generations. The Summit of the Future, scheduled for September 20-23, promises to convene world leaders to tackle urgent global challenges head-on.

Prime Minister Modi’s speech to the Indian-American audience holds heightened political weight, occurring merely weeks ahead of the critical US presidential elections on November 5, where Democratic nominee Kamala Harris will square off against Republican contender Donald Trump. Modi’s presence is perceived as reinforcing the vital connections between the Indian diaspora and the Indian government, whilst also highlighting India’s escalating global stature under his leadership.

As the clock ticks down to the "Modi & US" event, organizers exude optimism that this gathering will not only be a vibrant celebration of the enduring bonds between India and its diasporic community but also another cornerstone in Modi’s ongoing efforts to engage with the world’s Indian populace—a hallmark of his tenure that continues to gain momentum.
