Premier League Showdown: Manchester United Secures 2-1 Victory Against Brentford, Ending Winless Streak

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United, navigating through turbulent waters this season, emerged victorious in a thrilling encounter against Brentford on October 19, clinching a much-needed 2-1 triumph at the iconic Old Trafford. The pressure had been mounting on ten Hag following a disheartening five-match winless streak in the Premier League, but this agonizing struggle was momentarily set aside as Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Højland orchestrated a resounding comeback to seize all three points.

Yet, United’s campaign has resembled a rollercoaster ride, fraught with inconsistency despite a significant summer investment aimed at revitalizing the squad. The match against Brentford laid bare these ongoing challenges. Despite asserting dominance in the attacking phase throughout the first half, the dreaded defensive frailties resurfaced at the worst possible time. In the dying moments before halftime, a lapse in concentration during a corner allowed Brentford’s Ethan Pinnock to rise above a static defense, nodding the ball into the net and leaving United to grapple with a wave of disappointment as they retreated to the locker room.

However, the second half unfolded with an entirely different script. Barely two minutes after the whistle blew, the indomitable Garnacho notched the equalizer, executing a perfectly timed volley from a spectacular cross by Marcus Rashford. This moment sparked renewed hope and energy within the squad, invigorating their play and fanbase alike.

The decisive strike materialized in the 70th minute when Rasmus Højland, hungering for goals, finally found the back of the net. A deft flick from Bruno Fernandes set the stage for Højland to elegantly chip the ball over the Brentford goalkeeper, a flourish that not only secured a crucial victory but also assuaged rising doubts regarding United’s form.

### Challenges Ahead for Ten Hag

While this victory certainly alleviated some of the mounting pressure, it illuminated deeper issues that ten Hag must confront. United, despite demonstrating a rejuvenated attacking spirit, often fell short in converting golden opportunities. A disconcerting trend was the conspicuous absence of players in advanced positions, compelling the usually deep-lying Christian Eriksen to don the mantle of a forward in crucial attacking phases.

Moreover, the performance of Joshua Zirkzee underscored a significant concern regarding finishing. The Dutch forward showcased promising movement into dangerous areas but consistently faltered with his final touch—an aspect United must urgently rectify considering the crucial fixtures looming on the horizon.

As the squad gears up to face the formidable Fenerbahçe, managed by their former gaffer José Mourinho, in the Europa League on October 25, there is little time for complacency. Though doubts still linger, Erik ten Hag can momentarily breathe a sigh of relief, buoyed by the critical league win that might just serve as a catalyst for rejuvenation in their season.
