In a dazzling display of strategy and ambition, the Hockey India League (HIL) 2024/25 Player Auction unfolded its thrilling drama in the heart of New Delhi on the 13th and 14th of October 2024. The atmosphere was electric as eight franchises scrambled to assemble formidable squads, all set to clash in the vibrant arena of Rourkela later this season.

On the auction’s climactic second day, the fervor reached a fever pitch, particularly around the overseas talents. Victor Wegnez, hailing from Belgium, emerged as the pinnacle of bidding wars, ultimately securing a staggering Rs 40 lakh deal with the illustrious Soorma Hockey Club. Not far behind, Dutch Captain Thierry Brinkman drew eyes and wallets alike, fetching Rs 38 lakh, while Belgium’s prodigy, Arthur Van Doren, was snatched up by Kalinga Lancers for a cool Rs 32 lakh.

However, the Indian players were not to be overlooked in this whirlpool of competition. Moriangthem Rabichandra, with his electrifying skills, found a home with Kalinga Lancers at Rs 32 lakh, while the talented Maninder Singh caught the attention of Soorma Hockey Club for Rs 26 lakh.

The spotlight also shone brightly on budding stars, with Angad Bir Singh sealing a lucrative deal with Kalinga Lancers for Rs 26 lakh, closely followed by Rajinder, who joined the Hyderabad Toofans for Rs 23 lakh. The first day of the auction was dominated by the Indian core, with Harmanpreet Singh reigning supreme as the priciest acquisition for Soorma Hockey Club. Not to be outdone, Abhishek commanded a whopping Rs 72 lakh, going to the Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers, while Hardik Singh was secured by UP Rudras for Rs 70 lakh—a testament to the intense competition for top-tier talent.

The international scene was equally vibrant, with Germany’s Gonzalo Peillat topping the overseas charts with a lucrative Rs 68 lakh bid, while the Netherlands’ Jip Janssen enchanted collectors at Rs 54 lakh, joining the Tamil Nadu Dragons in a transaction that echoed excitement throughout the hall.

As the dust settles, the stage is set for an exhilarating season ahead, teeming with stars both local and foreign, promised to ignite the passion of hockey enthusiasts across the nation.
