Brief
Pakistan Triumphs in Trachoma Elimination Battle

On October 1, 2024, in a resounding triumph for global public health, the World Health Organization (WHO) has officially confirmed that Pakistan has eradicated trachoma as a public health threat. This debilitating disease, caused by the Chlamydia trachomatis bacterium, poses a grave risk of irreversible blindness if neglected.

With this landmark achievement, Pakistan joins the ranks of 18 other nations worldwide, marking its commitment to enhancing public health. The dedicated efforts of the Government of Pakistan, coupled with outstanding support from WHO, health professionals, and organizations such as Sightsavers, Christian Blind Mission, and the Fred Hollows Foundation, have culminated in this victory. It stands as a pivotal chapter in the ongoing global campaign against preventable diseases and their complete eradication.

Reflecting on the nation’s historical achievements, Pakistan had previously eliminated Guinea-Worm disease back in 1997. The successful eradication of trachoma signifies not merely an endpoint but heralds the dawn of further accomplishments on the horizon.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif remarked, “Today signifies a transformative juncture in our pursuit of a healthier Pakistan. Alongside our partners, we commemorate this victory and reaffirm our steadfast resolve to tackle diseases that hinder our socioeconomic progress, ensuring that quality healthcare is accessible to every citizen.”

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO Director-General, lauded this milestone, stating, “The elimination of trachoma as a public health issue in Pakistan is an extraordinary success for both the nation and the international community. This remarkable feat showcases the unwavering commitment of Pakistan’s healthcare workers, particularly at the grassroots level. It highlights the strength found in unity, innovation, and a collective dream for a healthier future.”

Dr. Hanan Balkhy, Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, emphasized the achievement’s significance, saying, “Congratulations to Pakistan for ridding itself of trachoma! By eradicating two neglected tropical diseases, Pakistan exemplifies its dedication to public health—an inspiration for nations worldwide.”

Dr. Luo Dapeng, WHO Representative in Pakistan, affirmed, “This outstanding accomplishment will spare countless individuals from avoidable visual impairment or blindness.”

The success story of Pakistan spotlights the effectiveness of the WHO-endorsed SAFE strategy, which encompasses Surgery for trichiasis, Antibiotics for infection eradication, Facial cleanliness, and Environmental enhancements to curb transmission.

In conclusion, Pakistan’s triumph over trachoma serves as a powerful testament that the control, elimination, and eradication of many neglected tropical diseases are not only feasible but also a shared aspiration within reach.
