Pentagon’s Tech Team Walks Out Following DOGE Disruptions

In a major setback for the Pentagon’s technology initiatives, almost the entire team known as the “SWAT team of nerds” from the Defense Digital Service (DDS) is set to resign in the next month. This wave of resignations has been linked to the growing impact of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk.

According to a report by Politico, which referenced internal emails and statements from the current director and a few other team members, this mass exit could effectively shut down the DDS program by the end of April. The DDS was formed in 2015 to bring the fast-paced, innovative spirit of Silicon Valley into the Department of Defense, with the goal of quickly developing tech solutions for national security challenges and driving innovation amidst the Pentagon’s vast bureaucratic landscape.

The DDS has been essential in creating tools for rapid responses, such as those needed during the withdrawal from Afghanistan, as well as setting up databases to assist in transferring military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine. It has also led initiatives to detect drones, among other key projects. The loss of this program would hinder the Department of Defense’s ability to find and train tech talent and combat emerging drone threats.

### Upcoming Departures

The 14-member DDS team is facing significant changes, as director Jennifer Hay plans to leave by May 1, along with eleven other employees who have chosen to accept a resignation package. The remaining two team members are also expected to depart soon.

A spokesperson from the Pentagon stated that the roles and responsibilities of the DDS will be taken over by the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO), which currently oversees the DDS. Jennifer Hay expressed that her team initially hoped to be part of Musk’s vision for automating Pentagon operations and embracing artificial intelligence, stating, “We thought we were going to be called in.”

The future of the DDS mirrors the fate of other digitization projects within the government that have fallen under the influence of DOGE. The US Digital Service, which worked on updating government technology and attracting tech talent, has also reportedly been affected by significant layoffs and staff reductions.
