IPL Alternate Reality: Imagining Virat Kohli in a Delhi Capitals Jersey in 2008

Exploring the What-Ifs: Virat Kohli’s Potential Journey with Delhi Capitals in IPL

In recent years, many of us have become familiar with the concept of the multiverse, thanks to popular superhero movies. In a similar vein, when looking at the Indian Premier League (IPL), we can imagine alternate scenarios that might have transformed the history of this beloved tournament, which has seen 17 seasons so far. From player signings to pivotal moments in matches, there are countless "what-if" situations worth considering.

Let’s look back to one significant moment in IPL history: the 2008 draft for Indian U-19 players. Among the promising talents was a dynamic young player from Delhi, Virat Kohli, who had just captained India to victory in the U-19 World Cup. Many assumed he would join the Delhi team, his home franchise. However, in a surprising twist, Delhi opted for Pradeep Sangwan instead. This opened the door for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), who eagerly signed Kohli. The rest is history—Kohli has since established himself as the highest run-scorer in IPL history and led RCB through many memorable seasons.

On the flip side, Delhi Capitals (DC) have only reached the final once—in 2020—and have made it to the playoffs just six times in their 18 seasons. This leads to an interesting conversation: What would have happened if Delhi had chosen Kohli over Sangwan? Let’s dive into this alternate reality.

Kohli’s Lifelong Association with Delhi

Had Delhi secured Kohli, it’s likely they would have recognized his talent and kept him for his entire career. Following the 2011 Cricket World Cup, Kohli rose to fame rapidly, breaking numerous records in both domestic and international cricket. His continued success suggests he would have remained a loyal player for Delhi throughout his journey.

A New Captain Leads Delhi

Considering Kohli’s leadership skills, it’s reasonable to assume he would have taken on the captaincy role for Delhi eventually. The franchise has struggled with steady leadership over the years, having seen 13 different captains in 18 seasons. If Kohli had led the team from 2013 onward, the consistency might have fostered a strong competitive spirit.

Delhi as Playoff Contenders

Kohli has frequently been the driving force behind RCB’s success, often pushing them into playoffs with his superb performances. If he had played for DC, alongside notable talents like Shreyas Iyer and David Warner, the team would likely have been perennial playoff contenders. Particularly, Kohli’s presence would have boosted fan support and energized the franchise’s profile.

Breaking the Title Drought

Kohli’s quest for an IPL title is a well-known narrative, as he remains one of the finest players yet to win the championship. Similarly, Delhi is still searching for their first title. In a parallel universe, it’s possible both could have overcome their title drought together, celebrating at least one victory by now.

A Different Relationship with Gambhir

One unforgettable incident in IPL history involved an on-field clash between Delhi’s Gautam Gambhir and RCB’s Kohli, which led to speculation about their strained relationship. However, had Kohli started his career at Delhi alongside Gambhir, they might have formed a strong partnership instead. In fact, when Kohli scored his first ODI century, Gambhir shared his Player of the Match award with him, showcasing a supportive bond. This camaraderie could have created a winning atmosphere within the Delhi franchise.

As we explore these alternate possibilities, it’s fascinating to think about how different the IPL landscape could have been if Virat Kohli had donned the Delhi Capitals jersey.
