US Government Shutdown Hangs in the Balance as Key Democrat Sidesteps Crisis

US Senate Moves to Avoid Government Shutdown Amid Tensions

WASHINGTON: On Friday, the US Senate seemed to be getting closer to preventing a government shutdown that could harm the economy. This shift came after the Senate’s top Democratic leader decided to avoid a major clash with President Trump, leading to some criticism from the party’s left wing.

The atmosphere among Democrats is tense due to Trump’s significant budget cuts, which have drastically affected various government sectors. Critics argue that this approach undermines Congress and represents an overreach of presidential power.

Some Democrats believe that rejecting the Republican plan to fund the government for another six months would be a way to show their disapproval of Trump’s agenda. While Republicans hold a slight edge with 53 out of 100 senators, they still require some Democratic votes to reach the 60 needed for passing their bill.

As the clock ticked toward the midnight deadline, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, who has often warned against the risks of a government shutdown, announced his support for the funding bill. He stated that a Democratic blockade could lead to chaos and would essentially be a “gift” to Trump. This decision drew anger from various senior Democrats, but earlier in the day, Trump expressed approval of Schumer’s move.

“Congratulations to Chuck Schumer for doing the right thing – it took ‘guts’ and courage!” Trump praised on his Truth Social platform.

However, not everyone was on board with Schumer’s choice. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi voiced her frustrations, criticizing the vote. She described it as a “false choice” between shutting down the government or allowing unchecked funding that could harm working families across the country.

Pelosi emphasized that neither alternative benefits the American people and that accepting such options without fighting back is simply unacceptable.
