Both leaders are expressing worries about how these changes could affect the representation of southern states in the Indian Parliament, especially in light of growing tensions over the promotion of the Hindi language.
Siddaramaiah took to social media to respond to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who claimed that no southern state would see a decrease in parliamentary representation. Siddaramaiah characterized Shah’s assurances as doubtful, suggesting there might be ulterior motives to foster confusion among southern states.
At the same time, MK Stalin fiercely defended the Tamil language in response to attempts to promote Hindi. He accused the central government of trying to impose Hindi, suggesting that it would undermine Tamil and its cultural heritage. Stalin emphasized that Tamil Nadu would resist any such imposition and pointed out the adverse effects that Hindi’s dominance has had on various regional languages.
The controversy is not limited to language, as both leaders represent southern states that feel marginalized in political discussions. They’ll be discussing these matters further at an upcoming all-party meeting in Kerala.
The delimitation exercise, originally planned for 2026, involves redrawing electoral boundaries based on population figures, with implications for how many representatives each state sends to the Lok Sabha. Experts have projected that should this exercise proceed based on current population data, states like Uttar Pradesh could dramatically increase their number of representatives at the expense of states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
Stalin’s criticism of the Hindi imposition ties to the ongoing discussions around the National Education Policy, which has prompted fears that an enforced three-language policy could push Tamil and other regional languages aside.
Meanwhile, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw rejected these concerns, stating that governance issues cannot be masked by divisive rhetoric and challenged opposition leaders about their positions on such matters.
