IND vs ENG 1st ODI Forecasted Lineup: Varun Chakravarthy Poised for First Appearance, Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul Selection Puzzle

India is gearing up for a fresh challenge as they embark on a three-match ODI series against England, starting on February 6 in Nagpur. This series will serve as a crucial opportunity for the team to sharpen their skills ahead of the Champions Trophy.

With the prestigious eight-team Champions Trophy just around the corner, team selection is under the spotlight. Captain Rohit Sharma noted that India hasn’t played many ODIs since the 2023 World Cup, making it essential to quickly find their aggressive playstyle that took them to the finals last year. “The World Cup was a year and a half ago, so it’s important for us to regroup and discuss our game plan,” Rohit mentioned ahead of the first ODI.

Watching India vs England ODI Series

Nine of the fifteen players selected for this series were part of the squad during the last ODI World Cup, but India is still keen to iron out the best combination. One significant absence will be Jasprit Bumrah, whose back injury will be evaluated by the BCCI’s medical team in Bengaluru. A decision on his fitness for the Champions Trophy is expected soon.

Additionally, the fitness of Mohammed Shami is being closely monitored. He made his return to international cricket during the recent T20I series against England, where he bowled limited overs but showed good form in practice. It is anticipated that both Shami and Arshdeep Singh will take on the front-line pace roles in the first ODI, with all-rounder Hardik Pandya providing additional support.

Varun Chakravarthy’s ODI Debut

Another exciting prospect for India is Varun Chakravarthy, who is set to debut in ODIs after being called up following impressive performances in T20Is. He took 14 wickets, including a remarkable five-wicket haul, earning him the Player of the Series award. “Varun has shown something special in T20s, and we want to see how he performs in this format,” Rohit explained. If Varun impresses, he could find a spot in the Champions Trophy squad.

However, including Varun might affect the batting strength of the team, as India has preferred depth in batting. Spinners, including Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, and Kuldeep Yadav, will be competing for places. Kuldeep is also returning from an injury, having missed the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.

Spin-Friendly Conditions at Nagpur

The Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium is expected to favor spin bowlers. In previous ODIs at this venue, totals rarely exceeded 250, often seeing spinners play a crucial role. With Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma likely opening the innings and Virat Kohli at No. 3, Yashasvi Jaiswal might have to wait for his chance, even though he is included in the squad.

Shreyas Iyer, who had a standout performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, is likely to return to the ODI lineup, adding strength to the batting order.

The wicketkeeper position remains a point of interest, with Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul both vying for the role. While Rahul filled in during the World Cup, India might consider giving Pant an opportunity to bring in a left-handed option in the batting lineup. "It’s a good problem to have," Rohit commented, noting both players’ capabilities to impact games.

Predicted XI for India

Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill (vice-captain), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh.

In contrast, England has also revealed their lineup for the first ODI, which includes Joe Root making a return after missing the 2023 World Cup. England’s selection contains four frontline bowlers, with spinner Adil Rashid expected to play a crucial role, and they will rely on part-time spin from Jacob Bethell, Liam Livingstone, and Root in the middle overs.

England’s Playing XI

Phil Salt (wicketkeeper), Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler (captain), Liam Livingstone, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Saqib Mahmood.

As India prepares for this important series, fans will surely be eager to see how the team performs and sets the stage for the upcoming Champions Trophy.
