Mental Health Experts Report Increase in Requests Amid Current Challenges

Mental health professionals are noticing a significant rise in requests for support tied to ongoing events and the unique challenges many are facing today. Patients are reporting feelings of stress, anxiety, and various mental health concerns. However, mental health experts have shared some strategies for coping.

Dr. Sammie LaMont Moss, a psychiatrist with Kaiser Permanente, discussed these issues during an interview. According to Dr. Moss, many patients are reporting an increase in mental health struggles, likely due to the constant stream of news and social media. This overwhelming flow of information seems to be contributing to their feelings of anxiety and unease.

Finding Balance in News Consumption

When asked about coping strategies, Dr. Moss suggested what some people are calling "news diets." He recommends that individuals take a set amount of time each day to stay updated on current events but also make time to unplug from news entirely. This can help reduce feelings of being bombarded by information.

In addition, Dr. Moss mentions the importance of tech “timeouts.” Setting aside phones and other devices allows individuals to relax, connect with family and friends, and share feelings with others who may be experiencing similar stress. Hearing from others can often provide comfort and connection.

Feedback from Patients

Many of Dr. Moss’s patients have reported that these strategies have been effective. They feel less overwhelmed and demonstrate they can still stay informed while managing their anxiety better.

Sources of Increased Stress

Dr. Moss notes that a change in the tone of public discourse has impacted stress levels. Many patients feel that information is now presented in a confrontational manner, creating a divide rather than simply sharing knowledge. This shift can lead to heightened feelings of anxiety, especially as uncertainty looms large in many people’s lives.

Certain groups, particularly those that may be more vulnerable, have also expressed heightened concerns. Individuals facing financial stress or dealing with societal issues have reported a greater sense of insecurity regarding their future.

Community and Support

To manage their stress, Dr. Moss encourages individuals to reach out to family, friends, and communities. Social connections can help individuals feel less alone and discover support systems they may not realize were available to them.

As the new year begins, Dr. Moss suggests that it is a great opportunity to prioritize self-care and consider resolutions to create healthy routines, such as regular exercise.

Finding Hope in Connection

Dr. Moss shared a positive example from a patient involved in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts and the LGBTQI community. This patient reached out and connected with a local center, finding a community that provided support and understanding. As a result, they shifted from feeling isolated to feeling hopeful and connected.

When to Seek Professional Help

Reaching out to mental health professionals can also be beneficial. Dr. Moss stresses the importance of establishing connections with mental health providers who understand the current challenges. With growing awareness of mental health issues, more resources are available to help those in need.

Dr. Moss reassures that throughout history, humans have shown resilience and the ability to bounce back from tough times. He encourages people to focus on what they can control and to support themselves and others during challenging moments.

In tough times, taking a step back to manage what is within one’s control can lead to a greater sense of well-being. With the right support and strategies, individuals can navigate these overwhelming situations and emerge stronger.
