Sinner Shines Bright as Zverev Admits Defeat in Australian Open Final
Alexander Zverev had high praise for rising Italian star Jannik Sinner after their match on Sunday, where Sinner triumphed in straight sets at the Australian Open final. This victory marked a significant milestone for Sinner, as he became the first Italian player to clinch three major titles, surpassing the previous record held by Nicola Pietrangeli, who won the French Open twice in the late 1950s.
What sets Sinner apart is his remarkable performance in the Grand Slam finals. He is now only the third player since 2000 to win a Grand Slam match without facing a single break point. Zverev, 27, recognized Sinner as the top player on hard courts, and this loss added to his record of three defeats in Grand Slam finals—having previously lost to Dominic Thiem in the US Open in 2020 and to Carlos Alcaraz at the French Open in 2024.
Zverev expressed his admiration for Sinner’s current form. “He’s by far the best,” he stated. “He has won all the Grand Slams on hard courts since last year. I think he’s lost only three or four matches on this surface. The numbers really show it; he’s in a different universe compared to everyone else.”
During the post-match ceremony, Zverev was humble about his performance, acknowledging that he fell short in the final. “It’s tough standing here knowing I couldn’t win. Congratulations to Jannik; you are the best player in the world right now. I wanted to compete more closely today, but you were just too strong. You truly deserve this victory, as does your entire team.”
Even though Zverev delivered an impressive 12 aces and scored 25 winners during the match, he was burdened by 45 unforced errors, which proved detrimental to his chances of winning. The German player had hoped to become the first German since Boris Becker in 1996 to secure a Grand Slam title but fell short against Sinner’s exceptional gameplay.
