NEW DELHI: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto was the guest of honor at India’s annual military and cultural parade, celebrating the nation’s 76th Republic Day in New Delhi on Sunday.

Republic Day commemorates the adoption of India’s constitution in 1950, following its independence. The parade takes place along a historic boulevard that is home to important government structures.

“May this occasion strengthen our efforts to uphold the values of our Constitution and build a stronger, prosperous India,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed on social media.

Strengthening Ties: Indonesia and India Sign Comprehensive Agreements

This year’s parade was a vibrant display, showcasing missile systems, impressive fighter jet flyovers, thrilling motorcycle stunts, and floats that represented various Indian states. Additionally, a contingent from the Indonesian military joined in the celebrations.

Prabowo’s visit marked his first trip to India since taking office as president in 2024. Notably, Indonesia was the guest nation at India’s inaugural Republic Day celebrations, with Modi highlighting how significant it is to welcome Indonesia back to the parade.

During his visit, India and Indonesia signed several agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation in health, maritime security, and digital technology, with both leaders referring to each other as “brothers.”

“To boost our collaboration in the defense sector, we have decided to work together on defense manufacturing and supply chains,” Modi shared in a joint statement on Saturday.

Prabowo mentioned that his government plans to send a “high-level defense delegation” to India soon.

Last year, India’s arms exports reached $2.63 billion, a modest figure compared to larger global players, but it marks a remarkable 30-fold increase over the past decade.
