Australian Open 2025: Aryna Sabalenka Leads the Charge, but Don’t Count Out Madison Keys

Sabalenka Dominates Badosa in Australian Open Semifinal

In a stunning display at the Australian Open, Aryna Sabalenka proved too strong for her close friend Paula Badosa, defeating her 6-4, 6-2 in the women’s singles semifinals. Badosa, clearly taken aback by Sabalenka’s performance, remarked, “Sometimes it feels like I’m just walking around the court, as if she were playing a video game.”

Since her Grand Slam victory in 2023, where she outplayed Elena Rybakina, the Belarusian star has been on a roll, now holding the title of World No. 1 for the first time in her career. Her semi-final win against Badosa further solidified her prowess on hard courts, putting her just one match away from achieving a remarkable three-peat of titles at Melbourne Park, a feat last accomplished by Martina Hingis in the late 1990s.

Sabalenka’s next challenge comes against Madison Keys in the final. Scheduled for Saturday, January 25, at Rod Laver Arena, she heads into the match as a clear favorite. Given her fantastic form, many expect Sabalenka to secure the title with relative ease.

However, it would be unwise to underestimate Keys. In her semi-final against Iga Swiatek, Keys had a rocky performance, making 40 unforced errors and seven double faults, struggling to maintain her serve at times. Despite these challenges, she displayed remarkable resilience, especially during a thrilling 10-point tie-break that allowed her to win after facing a match point.

Although Keys emerged victorious, her form raises questions about her chances against Sabalenka, who has been a formidable opponent throughout the tournament. Nonetheless, Keys brings a wealth of experience and determination, having been in the spotlight for over a decade.

This final marks Keys’ return to the Grand Slam scene since her 2017 loss to Sloanne Stephens at the US Open. Currently ranked No. 14 in the world, Keys is eager to claim her second Grand Slam title, adding to her nine career victories. Having recently defeated Swiatek, who boasts four majors, Keys will enter the final with renewed confidence.

In their history of meetings, Sabalenka holds a significant edge over Keys, winning four of five matches, including their last two encounters in major tournaments. However, in a previous semifinal match at the US Open in 2023, Keys managed to win the first set decisively before ultimately losing the match.

Head-to-Head Summary:

  • Total Matches Played: 5
    • Sabalenka Wins: 4
    • Keys Wins: 1
  • In Grand Slams:
    • Matches Played: 2
    • Sabalenka Wins: 2
    • Keys Wins: 0

As the final approaches, all eyes will be on the two players as they prepare to battle for the prestigious title in what promises to be an exciting showdown.
