Wildfires Rage Near Los Angeles, Forcing Thousands to Evacuate
LOS ANGELES: On Wednesday, thousands of residents near Los Angeles were forced to leave their homes as three wildfires, intensified by powerful winds, swept through suburban neighborhoods, destroying many houses.
One firefighter was reported injured while fighting the blaze near the upscale Pacific Palisades area, and several individuals were also treated for burns, according to local media.
Strong winds worsened the situation, carrying flames and embers far and sparking new fires faster than firefighters could control them. By morning, a thick cloud of smoke hung over Los Angeles, filling the air with the smell of burning.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass cautioned that the “windstorm is expected to worsen through the morning” in a post shared on social media early Wednesday.
Reports indicated that some firefighters in the Palisades faced water shortages at fire hydrants, while the fire had already consumed nearly 3,000 acres of land.
Near Altadena, the Eaton fire spread over 2,200 acres, prompting emergency workers to evacuate elderly patients from a care facility in wheelchairs. A third fire was reported burning near Santa Clarita.
The Pacific Palisades fire has devastated dozens of homes in this affluent area, known for its connections to Hollywood stars living in multi-million dollar properties. Emmy-award-winning actor James Woods shared a video showing flames threatening his home as he prepared to evacuate, expressing his heartbreak: “It feels like losing a loved one.”
In response to the fires, events in the area were postponed, including the premiere of Jennifer Lopez’s new film "Unstoppable." The Screen Actors Guild Award also announced that Wednesday’s live nominations ceremony would be replaced by a press release.
President Joe Biden reported that he was receiving constant updates about the wildfires and had extended an offer of federal assistance if necessary.
The fires began unexpectedly on Tuesday morning, catching many residents off guard. One Pacific Palisades resident, Andrew Hires, received a text alert about the fire while at the dentist with his child. “We pulled off the mask and ran to the car,” he recounted.
While trees and brush around the Getty Villa were scorched, the museum itself, which houses antiquities and is one of the richest art museums in the world, remained unharmed.
The fires coincided with seasonal Santa Ana winds, with forecasts predicting this could become the worst windstorm in ten years, with gusts reaching up to 100 miles per hour.
“This looks pretty concerning,” meteorologist Daniel Swain stated.
Wildfires are a recurring issue in the western United States and play an important role in nature. However, scientists warn that climate change due to human activity is altering weather patterns. Southern California has faced two decades of drought, followed by two unusually wet years, leading to excessive plant growth that has prepared the region for devastating fires.
