Seagate Technology Reports Strong First Quarter Results for Fiscal 2027

Seagate Technology Holdings PLC has recently shared promising financial results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, showcasing substantial growth across various sectors. The company reported revenues of $4.2 billion, marking a remarkable 61% increase compared to the same quarter last year. Furthermore, Seagate achieved a record non-GAAP earnings per share of $7.68 and an impressive operating margin of 50.7%.

Key Growth Driver: Data Center Demand

A significant factor behind Seagate’s success has been the strong demand from data centers, which contributed $3.4 billion, making up 81% of the company’s total sales. The firm attributed this growth to the increased demand for cloud services, artificial intelligence data storage, and expanding needs for data retention.

Positive Outlook on Growth and Shareholder Returns

Looking ahead, Seagate has raised its outlook for growth and shareholder returns. For the upcoming quarter, the company expects revenue of $4.8 billion and a non-GAAP EPS of $9.20. Additionally, Seagate is nearing the completion of its debt reduction plans and anticipates increasing share buybacks in the upcoming year.

Chief Executive Officer Dave Mosley expressed confidence in the company’s performance, noting consistent demand for storage solutions, favorable pricing, and ongoing technological advancements as key contributors to expected growth throughout the fiscal year.

Impressive Data Center Performance

Seagate’s data center revenues not only grew by 18% from the previous quarter but also saw a 63% jump compared to last year. During this period, the company shipped a total of 220 exabytes, 198 of which went directly to data center clients, indicating that data center shipments constituted 90% of Seagate’s total exabyte volume.

Mosley mentioned that their cloud storage products have now experienced twelve consecutive quarters of revenue growth. The company’s edge IoT business also thrived, reporting revenues of $784 million, an increase of 13% sequentially and 52% year over year.

Focus on Advanced Storage Solutions

Seagate is actively expanding its next-generation storage products with its HAMR (Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording) technology. The Mozaic 4 drives will soon offer capacities of up to 44 terabytes, further enhancing Seagate’s offerings to cloud service providers. The company anticipates that HAMR-based solutions will account for about 50% of its future exabyte shipments.

Management acknowledged that the slower growth in exabyte shipments last quarter was due to product transitions rather than any problems with production or readiness.

Commitment to Shareholder Value

Seagate maintained a strong cash flow of $1.7 billion during the quarter while also reducing its capital expenditures to 5% of revenue. The company has made significant strides in reducing its debt, retiring $1.2 billion and bringing its total principal debt down to about $1.6 billion.

As a sign of confidence in future performance, Seagate returned $568 million to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases in the previous quarter and raised its quarterly dividend by nearly 3%. The company aims to return 75% of free cash flow to its shareholders, primarily through repurchases and dividends.

Looking Ahead

For the December quarter, Seagate is forecasting revenue of about $4.8 billion, along with a non-GAAP EPS of $9.20. The projections reflect continued momentum in demand, increased shipments, and a steady execution of pricing strategies.

In summary, Seagate Technology has demonstrated remarkable growth and resilience, driven by the growing demand for data storage solutions. The company looks poised for a successful fiscal year, balancing growth and shareholder returns effectively.
