Adventurer Karl Bushby Completes 28-Year Journey to the UK
Adventurer Karl Bushby has finally returned to the UK after an incredible 28-year journey around the world. On October 5, he made headlines by successfully swimming across the English Channel from France to England. While resting in Dover, he reflected on his incredible journey, expressing his emotions as he spotted the Union Jack flag flying outside his hotel. “I’ve seen many flags during my travels, but this one is truly special,” he shared.
Excitement filled his social media as he celebrated his return with one of his favorite meals: authentic British fish and chips.
Bushby’s Journey Nears Its End
Bushby’s adventure is nearing its conclusion, as he aims to reach his mother’s home in Hull by the end of the month. His website reveals that his remarkable expedition began with a birthday card he received in the 1990s. It depicted two soldiers debating the impossible task of walking from London to New York via the Bering Strait. Inspired, Bushby grabbed a map and charted a path, realizing he had found his life’s mission.
In another inspiring story, Dale “Grey Beard” Sanders recently reclaimed the title of the oldest person to complete a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail at the age of 91.
A Mission From South America to Europe
Bushby’s journey officially started on November 1, 1998, in Chile, with only a few hundred dollars to his name. “South America was vibrant and new; it felt like living a boy’s adventure,” he recalled. He walked north towards the United States, waiting for the Bering Strait to freeze so he could cross from Alaska to Russia. In April 2012, a visa denial halted his progress. In a bold move, he protested by walking to the Russian Embassy in Washington, D.C. His efforts paid off, and he continued his journey through Mongolia, China, and even swam across the Caspian Sea.
Now in Europe, Bushby reflects on the journey. “You’ll discover you are far more capable than you think. People often underestimate their potential, and the world isn’t as daunting as it seems,” he said.
Bushby has faced many challenges along the way, including visa issues and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which delayed his travels significantly. Despite these hurdles, he emphasizes that the kindness of strangers kept him pushing forward. “The world is an amazing place, and it’s the people I’ve met along the way that have motivated me,” he commented.
With about 240 miles left to walk, Karl Bushby has traveled over 30,000 miles through 29 countries. “We moved at a good pace, doing what was necessary, and it has worked out. It’s time for me to stop, as my knees and ankles are telling me,” he concluded.
Bushby’s remarkable journey serves as a testament to human perseverance and the spirit of adventure.
