Business Travel Boosts Local Economies Globally

Recent findings reveal that business travel is playing a significant role in stimulating economies around the world. According to a new report by the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA), business travellers contributed an impressive estimated $283 billion to the economy in 25 major cities, creating numerous jobs and supporting local businesses.

The report highlights that business travel spending reached about $178 billion in these cities in 2024, supporting 1.4 million jobs and adding $93 billion to the local GDP. Additionally, this expenditure generated nearly $54 billion in wages and $55 billion in tax revenue, showcasing the substantial impact of business travel on urban economies.

Suzanne Neufang, CEO of GBTA, emphasized the importance of business travel, stating, “It’s a key driver of economic growth.” She explained that when individuals travel for work to connect and collaborate, the benefits stretch far beyond just the companies involved, encouraging job creation, further income, and tax revenues in local communities.

Leading Cities in Business Travel Spending

Some cities are particularly notable in their business travel expenditures. Seven cities alone surpassed $10 billion in spending, accounting for over 60% of the total seen in this study. The top spenders include cities like Tokyo, New York, and London, which are major hubs for business activity.

Following these top cities, Washington DC, San Francisco, and Amsterdam also made significant contributions, with each surpassing $5 billion in business travel spending.

The Ripple Effect of Business Travel

The economic influence of business travel extends beyond direct spending. For every dollar spent by business travellers, an estimated $1.59 is generated in local economic activity. This includes sales for local businesses, contributions to GDP, and tax revenues. On average, $1 billion in business travel spending supports around 7,800 jobs in the area.

Different cities experienced varying multipliers based on their local economies. For instance, New York generated around $1.76 in economic activity per dollar spent, while Copenhagen saw a significant portion of its revenue come from taxes on travel spending.

Local Differences in Business Travel Factors

Unique factors influence spending in different cities. London reported the highest daily spending per business traveller, while Shanghai had a considerable demand for hotel rooms from groups. Cities like Stockholm and Oslo noted significant growth in demand for group accommodations.

In conclusion, the findings from this report underscore the vital role that business travel plays in strengthening local economies worldwide, highlighting how it fosters job creation, supports businesses, and ultimately contributes to vibrant urban centers. The data demonstrates that as business travel continues to grow, its positive effects on communities will likely expand as well.
