Google is celebrating its 28th birthday, and it’s a great time to take a closer look at its unique offices and data centers spread across the globe. From a converted flour mill in Dublin to a century-old residence in Paris and even a data center built in a former paper mill in Finland, each location has its own character that reflects the local culture and environment.

With offices and data centers in over 200 cities across six continents, Google incorporates local elements into its workplaces, blending community, design, and sustainability. Some of these offices boast indoor gardens, beehives, and artwork by local artists. They also feature modern amenities like electric vehicle charging stations and spaces for development and AI research. Notably, Google’s Mountain View headquarters is home to a bronze dinosaur named Stan, and there are ongoing plans for a lunar office that have yet to progress as planned.

To mark this special occasion, here are 25 interesting facts about some of Google’s offices and data centers worldwide:

  1. Johannesburg, South Africa: Upon entering the Google office here, visitors are greeted by a stunning art installation made from 46 kilometers of beads, crafted by local women. The artwork spells out “Howzit,” a South African greeting.

  2. Mountain View, United States: At Googleplex, beehives were introduced in 2010 to support local bee populations and provide fresh honey for the kitchens. Employees can participate in beekeeping activities.

  3. Dublin, Ireland and other locations: Google is investing in renovating older buildings rather than constructing new ones. For example, its Dublin office is in a historic flour mill, and other buildings have been repurposed from their previous uses as factories.

  4. California, United States: Google is committed to promoting electric vehicles. Currently, it has over 5,000 EV charging stations at its U.S. offices.

  5. Tokyo, Japan and Hamburg, Germany: Google’s first international office was opened in Tokyo in 2001, followed by Hamburg. Now, the company has spread its reach with offices in numerous cities globally.

  6. Belo Horizonte, Brazil: This office is designed to bring the outdoors inside, featuring over 360 orchids that help monitor air quality. Many plants are grown and donated to local communities as they mature.

  7. Seoul, South Korea: A new floor at Google’s office was designed with accessibility in mind, including features like braille signs and automatic doors, thanks to feedback from employees with disabilities.

  8. Dubai, United Arab Emirates: Google’s Dubai office reflects the local culture, with themes and names in meeting rooms inspired by the diverse region.

  9. Accra, Ghana: The first AI research center in Africa was established here, focusing on using AI to solve important challenges for communities.

  10. Mountain View, United States: The Bay View campus features a unique solar “dragonscale” roof, allowing it to generate clean energy from nearly 90,000 solar panels.

  11. Montreal, Canada: The office showcases local artists’ works, celebrating the vibrant culture of the city. Notably, a quilt from a local artist adds a warm touch to the reception area.

  12. Atlanta, United States: The design of the Atlanta office honors the city’s rich cultural history, featuring artwork by local artists and a staircase representing LGBTQ+ pride.

  13. London, England: The office has a fun sticky-note art display created by employees, showcasing various characters from popular culture.

  14. St. Ghislain, Belgium: Google’s data center here was the first to operate without refrigeration, using a unique cooling system that’s environmentally friendly.

  15. Tokyo, Japan: Located in bustling Shibuya, the Tokyo office has a ramen bar inspired by local eateries, offering a unique dining experience for employees.

  16. New York City, United States: The offices there now run on upgraded clean energy from hydropower, supporting Google’s goal to use 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030.

  17. Mexico City, Mexico: The office decoration includes designs inspired by “papel picado,” a traditional Mexican art form.

  18. Paris, France: The office is housed in a historic building that was once a 19th-century residence. Some original architectural details still exist, like a ceiling featuring names of regional train destinations.

  19. Belo Horizonte, Brazil: This office shares space with a prominent urban farm, contributing fresh salads to the employee cafe.

  20. Tennessee, United States: Google is dedicated to environmental efforts, such as restoring over 100 acres of prairie land around one of its data centers.

  21. Singapore: The Developer Space at Google Singapore encourages local developers and startups to collaborate and grow their skills.

  22. Mountain View, United States: The GBikes program helps employees move around the campus easily, with millions of rides completed since its introduction.

  23. Detroit, United States: Google’s office is situated within a major sports and entertainment venue, enhancing the local community experience.

  24. New Taipei, Taiwan: The office has evolved from just one employee in 2006 to becoming a significant hub for hardware engineering in the region.

  25. Mountain View, United States: Stan the T. rex at the Mountain View campus serves as a fun reminder of evolution and change, frequently dressed up for special occasions.

Additionally, Google is still looking for candidates for its ambitious lunar office project, which has been under discussion for years and is humorously described as “just a bit behind schedule.”

These fascinating insights highlight not just Google’s growth but also its commitment to innovation, community, and sustainability across the globe.
