Indian Diaspora Encouraged to Invest in Emerging Technologies in South Africa
Johannesburg, Sep 20 (PTI) – Harivansh Singh, the Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha, has asked the Indian community in South Africa to engage more deeply with India’s technological growth. Speaking at a community gathering in Johannesburg on Friday, following his participation in the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Cape Town, Singh highlighted the exciting opportunities in sectors such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, semiconductors, and clean energy.
In his address, Singh invited professionals and entrepreneurs from the Indian diaspora to explore these emerging technologies. He stated, “You have a chance to create a new chapter where your businesses and investments can build an even stronger bridge between India and South Africa.”
Singh pointed out the strong economic ties between India and South Africa, noting that the country is India’s top trading partner in Africa. Over 150 major Indian companies are currently operating in South Africa, generating more than 20,000 job opportunities. He mentioned that there is still great potential to enhance trade, investment, and industrial collaboration between the two nations.
The Deputy Chairman also expressed India’s commitment to supporting Africa, referencing the African Union’s recent inclusion as a permanent member of the G20 during India’s presidency this year.
He praised the contributions of the nearly 1.7 million people of Indian descent living in South Africa, who have made significant impacts in fields like business, education, healthcare, law, public service, and culture while maintaining their ties to their Indian heritage.
Singh reflected on Mahatma Gandhi’s time in South Africa, noting how his experiences with racial discrimination shaped his political beliefs. He urged the diaspora to strengthen their partnerships with India, encouraging them to invest, mentor young innovators, and foster commercial connections for a brighter future together.
