India’s Medal Hopes Shine Bright in Teqball at Asian Games
India may have found a promising contender for medals in Teqball at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, with Quimcy Joaquim Dsouza making a strong impression in both women’s singles and mixed doubles events.
At just 24 years old, Dsouza is making her debut at the Asian Games and has already reached the semifinals in women’s singles after dominating Group A. Alongside her partner, Mohammed Anas Imran Beg, she continues to strive for medals in the mixed doubles category, having recently won a crucial repechage match after a setback in the quarterfinals.
Chasing Glory in Singles
Dsouza’s journey in the singles event has been remarkable, bringing her just one win away from achieving a historic medal for India in a sport that is new to the Asian Games. She will face Indonesia’s Sumaya in the semifinal on Saturday. A win would secure at least a silver medal for Dsouza, while a loss would still give her a shot at bronze on Sunday.
The young athlete started her campaign with an impressive upset, defeating top seed Yuina Sakamoto of Japan with a score of 2-1 (10-12, 12-11, 13-11) in a gripping 43-minute match at the Nagoya City Higashi Sports Center. Dsouza then secured a more straightforward victory against Cambodia’s Koemyean DY, winning 2-0 (12-9, 12-7) in just 24 minutes, which allowed her to advance directly to the semifinals after receiving a bye in the quarterfinals.
Mixed Doubles Challenge
In the mixed doubles arena, Dsouza and Beg have faced a tougher challenge, but they remain determined to reach the podium. After an initial loss in the quarterfinals to Vietnam’s Hoang Minh Tan Nguyen and Gia Nghi Trinh (0-2), the duo bounced back emphatically in the repechage, beating the Philippines’ Jhoana Abulencia and Prince Augustin with a decisive score of 2-0 (12-3, 12-6). Earlier, they had already defeated the same Filipino pair in the group stage, making their path to the quarterfinals a bit smoother despite earlier setbacks against teams from Cambodia and Thailand.
The final rounds for mixed doubles medals are set to occur on Sunday.
Excitement Surrounding Teqball
Teqball is one of six new sports debuting at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, alongside mixed martial arts, padel, surfing, BMX freestyle, and virtual taekwondo. A unique blend of football and table tennis, Teqball was invented in Hungary in 2014. In this sport, players use almost any part of their body except their hands and arms to send a size five football across a curved table that is separated by a transparent net.
With Dsouza competing in two events, India has a chance to make its mark in this exciting new sport at the continental event.
As the competition heats up, all eyes will be on Dsouza as she aims to bring home a medal and carve out a place for India in the world of Teqball.
