Kimi Antonelli Triumphs at Monza: An Italian Home Victory
Kimi Antonelli made history by winning the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday, racing from 19th to 1st in an exciting show at Monza. This remarkable performance dealt a significant blow to his Mercedes teammate and title rival, George Russell.
Antonelli, just 20 years old, became the first Italian to win at Monza since Ludovico Scarfiotti with Ferrari in 1966. Additionally, this victory marked the 50th win for an Italian driver in Formula One since the championship began in 1950.
Russell had initially taken the lead on lap two, shortly before Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc crashed, causing a 30-minute race interruption. In the end, Russell finished in second place, 3.857 seconds behind Antonelli, who was faster on fresh tires. Max Verstappen took third place for Red Bull, trailing well behind.
Russell had hoped to close the gap on Antonelli, who started at the back of the grid due to engine penalties. Instead, after this race, he finds himself 66 points behind, as Antonelli inches closer to becoming Formula One’s youngest champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
“Oh my god, oh my god!” Antonelli shouted over the radio as he crossed the finish line, marking his seventh win of the season and giving the Monza crowd a reason to cheer, especially after Ferrari missed the podium. “I could have never imagined being here today. We managed to pull it off, and I’m really, really happy,” he shared after his victory.
A Race of Challenges
Throughout the race, Antonelli battled through the ranks, frequently trading the lead with Russell. During a virtual safety car period, he pitted while Russell stayed out, dramatically narrowing an 8.9-second gap to under one second in just ten laps. However, with four laps to go, Antonelli momentarily lost control, slipping into the gravel.
Despite this setback, he regained the lead on lap 51 out of 53 and pulled away for the win. Russell noted that he struggled with tire performance towards the end of the race on a particularly hot day. “It felt like a strong race for us, but I was just having issues with the tires at the end. We ran the whole race on that one hard tire,” he explained.
McLaren’s reigning champion, Lando Norris, crossed the finish line fourth, edging out teammate Oscar Piastri in the last lap, while still sitting 96 points behind in the standings. Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari finished sixth after a tough start, which saw him drop from fourth to tenth thanks to an incident with Leclerc.
Pierre Gasly, who started on pole for the Alpine team, managed to secure seventh place. Racing Bulls’ rookie Arvid Lindblad finished in eighth, with Franco Colapinto of Alpine and Yuki Tsunoda rounding out the top ten.
An Unpredictable Race
Antonelli began on hard tires and quickly moved up to 12th when the race was halted due to red flags. At the re-start, Russell held pole position, and with everyone switching tires, Antonelli made a strategic move to medium tires. Gasly lined up second, with Colapinto in fourth.
The initial restart was called off due to a mix-up on the grid, but when the race resumed, Colapinto quickly jumped into third place, only to lose control and drop back down to 16th. By the tenth lap, Antonelli was in sixth place, then climbed his way up to second by lap 16.
Antonelli took the lead for the first time on lap 18, but the battle for the top spot was fierce, with both drivers swapping positions frequently on the fast-paced track, where drafting plays a crucial role. Antonelli and Verstappen responded to a virtual safety car after Lance Stroll from Aston Martin had to stop on the track. They opted to pit and rejoined the race in sixth and seventh, while Russell remained on hard tires.
The next race in the Formula One calendar is set for the Spanish Grand Prix next weekend at the new Madring circuit in Madrid.
