Growing Alliance Between Iran and Russia Amidst Global Tensions
The bond between Iran and Russia is becoming stronger, as both nations find themselves in need of each other, according to analysts. This comment comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his support for Iran during a recent meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Kyrgyzstan.
During their encounter, Putin emphasized that Russia stands firmly with Iran, noting the country’s bravery in defending its interests. He also requested Pezeshkian to send his well-wishes to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei.
Philip Breedlove, a retired U.S. Air Force General and former NATO commander, remarked that the relationship between these two countries is intensifying because they require each other’s assistance. He noted that both Iran and Russia are experiencing economic struggles, with Russia relying on Iran for missile production amid its military challenges. Conversely, Iran needs support from Russia to enhance its military capabilities and gather intelligence.
Brodsky, policy director at United Against Nuclear Iran, highlighted that the longstanding partnership serves the strategic interests of both countries. Russia views Iran as a tool against the U.S., while Iran relies on Russia for military advancements and political backing, especially at the U.N. Security Council.
The complex dynamics of the U.S.-Iran conflict have evolved into a battle of wills, with both sides engaging in aerial strikes. Breedlove explained that while the U.S. maintains air and sea dominance, Iran’s forces feel secure because they believe they only need to survive the conflict without necessarily winning it.
Pezeshkian reinforced the strength of the Iran-Russia relationship by expressing gratitude for Russia’s support during times of conflict and U.S. sanctions. He stressed that their cooperation goes beyond standard diplomatic relations, asserting its significance in standing against U.S. pressures.
In further discussions, Breedlove pointed out that the approach to Russia has changed over the years. The awareness is growing that Russia does not aspire to join the Western world and is moving towards a distinct sphere of influence, particularly in conjunction with China.
