Duqm Port Welcomes One of the World’s Largest RoRo Vessels with Over 1,200 Vehicles

MUSCAT: On Thursday, Duqm Port marked a significant achievement by welcoming one of the largest roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) ships from China, carrying over 1,200 vehicles destined for Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) markets. This arrival showcases the port’s expanding ability to manage substantial vehicle shipments, further strengthening its role as a crucial link between Asian and regional markets.

According to Duqm Port Company, the successful docking of the BYD Changsha illustrates the port’s capability to accommodate large-capacity RoRo vessels and effectively manage vehicle logistics. With its advanced infrastructure, Duqm Port boasts an impressive annual capacity to handle around 300,000 vehicles.

In a press statement, Duqm Port CEO Reggy Vermeulen described the arrival of the BYD vessel as a pivotal moment for vehicle operations at the port. He noted that this event highlights the increasing confidence in Duqm Port’s services and its importance in regional trade activities. Vermeulen emphasized that the port’s strategic location along the Arabian Sea and outside the Strait of Hormuz, combined with its well-developed infrastructure, enhances its attractiveness as a conduit for trade between Asian markets and the GCC.

Vermeulen also mentioned the growing prospects for attracting additional trade routes and appealing to global companies looking for efficient access to the region. He assured that Duqm Port would continue to enhance its capabilities and forge strategic partnerships, reinforcing Oman’s position as a central hub for trade and logistics.

The BYD vessel, capable of carrying approximately 9,200 vehicles, delivered 1,219 vehicles intended for the GCC market during its journey. The unloading process will see over 200 vehicles designated for Oman, while the rest will be distributed across various Gulf markets, including Kuwait and Qatar.

Situated in the Special Economic Zone at Duqm in Oman’s Al Wusta Governorate, Duqm Port features a 2.2-kilometer commercial quay capable of handling large vessels and diverse cargo. The port is also equipped with specialized RoRo operations for vehicle handling. Its advantageous location not only serves international trade routes but also facilitates access to markets in the Indian subcontinent, Asia, Africa, and the GCC states.
