Munich’s Defence Tech Surge: Germany’s Military Revamp Transforms the Bavarian City

Munich Emerges as a Hub for Defence Technology

Published on 01/09/2026 at 8:57 GMT+2 | Updated at 9:07

Munich, famous for its Oktoberfest and the Bayern Munich football club, is quickly transforming into a key centre for defence technology in Europe. A surge of young companies focused on artificial intelligence (AI) drones and military software are now making their home in the Bavarian capital.

This growth is largely driven by a significant increase in German government spending on defence. In the federal budget for 2026, around €82.7 billion has been allocated to defence, which is about €29.4 billion more than in the previous year. This includes plans to increase troop numbers by up to 10,000.

When factoring in a special fund aimed at modernising the armed forces, total defence spending will be close to €108 billion for 2026. This represents a rise of approximately 24% compared to the previous year, marking the first time since 1990 that German military spending has surpassed 2% of its GDP, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.

Among the companies leading this charge are Quantum Systems, a drone manufacturer; Helsing, an AI defence firm; and Tytan Technologies, which focuses on interceptor drones. Quantum Systems, which began operations in 2015, has been supplying drones to Ukraine and is now expanding into land and maritime systems. Tytan, founded in 2023 by two graduates from the Technical University of Munich, has rapidly grown its workforce and is planning to set up a new production facility.

“Our founders had a clear goal – to improve European air defence capabilities,” stated Nemo Farber, the chief manufacturing officer at Tytan.

Experts attribute Munich’s rise as a defence tech hub to its strong engineering talent, prestigious universities, and a supportive political environment. “Munich is a great place for skills, talent, and innovation,” said Martin Karkour, chief revenue officer of Quantum Systems. “We have a mix of engineering, software, AI, and robotics skills that are not easy to find elsewhere.”

According to the city’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the number of defence startups in the region has doubled in recent years, reaching around 60. Many workers from the ailing car industry are also transitioning into defence roles.

However, challenges persist. Companies report delays in security clearances and slow approval processes for new production sites. Many complain that funding still prioritises traditional heavy weaponry over autonomous technologies. Maximilian Epp, a defence expert from the chamber, pointed out that “startups often struggle to increase production when they have orders waiting, but the necessary permits for new facilities are delayed.”

Munich’s mayor, Dominik Krause, attributes the growth of this sector to collaboration between large and small companies, as well as strong partnerships between universities and government authorities.

Nonetheless, the rapid growth of the industry has brought risks. Reports have surfaced of the head of Bavarian drone company Donaustahl going into hiding due to an alleged Russian assassination plot, and a failed plot against the CEO of Rheinmetall in 2024. “We understand the situation we are in and have taken necessary precautions,” remarked Martin Karkour of Quantum.

As Munich continues to strengthen its position in the defence technology sector, the future looks both promising and challenging for its burgeoning companies.
