Thea Frodin Ready to Shine at US Open Following Role as Young Serena Williams in King Richard

Thea Frodin Set to Make Grand Slam Debut at US Open

Thea Frodin is about to embark on an exciting new chapter in her young tennis career. After playing a young Serena Williams in the film “King Richard” back in 2021, the 17-year-old American will make her main-draw debut at the prestigious US Open.

Frodin faces a tough challenge in her first round as she goes up against Elena Rybakina, who is currently ranked No. 2 in the world. Rybakina recently returned to the court after recovering from an ankle injury sustained at the Cincinnati Open.

Frodin’s rise to the US Open has been marked by a stellar junior career and a significant win earlier this month. She earned a wildcard entry by triumphing at the USTA Billie Jean King Girls’ 18s National Championships in San Diego, where she dominated the final match against Janae Preston with a score of 6-1, 6-0.

A Young Star with a Bright Future

Hailing from Southern California, Thea picked up her first tennis racket at the age of six. Now, she trains full-time in Nashville and is currently ranked around No. 580 in the world. Her journey has already been impressive, highlighted by her semi-final appearance in the girls’ singles at the Australian Open earlier this year and a runner-up finish in girls’ doubles at Wimbledon in 2025.

At just 12 years old, Frodin had the unique opportunity to serve as the body double for Serena Williams in “King Richard.” She spent six months preparing for the role, emulating Serena’s iconic playing style and even picking up some of her techniques along the way.

Frodin has expressed her admiration for Serena, which makes her debut at the US Open all the more special. Interestingly, Serena and her sister Venus will also be competing in this year’s tournament, creating a fascinating connection between Frodin’s past and her present.

As she prepares to step onto the court, Frodin understands the significance of the moment. Facing Rybakina, a two-time Grand Slam champion, is no small feat, but Frodin is ready for the challenge. “She’s No. 2 for a reason, so I’m expecting a battle. Hopefully, I can bring out my best level against her,” she remarked.

From portraying a young tennis legend to now making her own mark on the Grand Slam stage, Thea Frodin’s journey is just beginning, and fans will be eager to see what happens next.
