Ireland’s Mags Cremen and Zoe Hyde Crowned World Champions in Rowing

Mags Cremen and Zoe Hyde have made history as Ireland’s latest World Champions by clinching the gold medal in the Women’s Double Sculls at the World Rowing Championships held in Amsterdam on Friday evening.

The duo showcased an incredible performance, overcoming a strong Dutch team on their home waters. Although the Netherlands surged ahead at the beginning, Cremen and Hyde maintained their focus and remained within striking distance, eventually powering past their opponents during the critical moments of the race to secure the championship title.

Achieving this victory is particularly impressive given the support and strength of the local Dutch crew. This gold medal caps off a season where Cremen and Hyde have consistently proven themselves at the top level, having previously secured a bronze medal in Seville and a fourth-place finish in Lucerne. They won their heats and semi-finals leading up to this defining race, where their best effort emerged when it mattered the most.

Both athletes are also set to represent Ireland at the Paris 2024 Olympics, and this win marks a significant highlight in their careers together, being their first senior World Championship title.

Building Towards Future Success

This victory is not just a personal achievement for Cremen and Hyde but also a milestone for the Rowing Ireland High Performance program, which is building towards future Olympic cycles, including Los Angeles 2028. Ireland’s recent success in rowing stems from steady investments in athletes, coaching, and international competition, aiming to sustain and grow the country’s medal prospects moving forward.

The strong performance of Cremen and Hyde indicates that the Women’s Double Sculls team can contribute to Ireland’s chances of winning medals in the future.

Murtagh and McCarthy Continue Strong Showing

Meanwhile, defending World Champion Fiona Murtagh made a smooth transition into the semi-finals of the Women’s Single Sculls after a solid win in her quarter-final, finishing in 7:20.80. She quickly gained momentum over her Swiss rival and maintained a significant lead over Australia. However, she will face tough competition in the upcoming rounds, including formidable opponents like Great Britain’s Lauren Henry and Olympic Champion Karolien Florijn.

Double Olympic Champion Fintan McCarthy is also making waves with his transition into open-weight rowing. He qualified for the semi-finals of the Men’s Single Sculls after a respectable third-place finish in his quarter-final, further establishing his reputation in a new weight class.

Additionally, Imogen Magner and Natalie Long wrapped up their Championships, finishing fifth in the Women’s Pair B Final and placing 11th overall.

A Bright Future for Irish Rowing

The victory of Cremen and Hyde extends beyond just a gold medal; it highlights the potential of Ireland’s rowing program and its capability to produce extraordinary athletes. As they enter the next chapter of international rowing, the achievements of Murtagh defending her title and McCarthy’s success in open-weight rowing underscore the promise of continued growth and success on the world stage.

With Irish rowing firmly on the rise, the nation looks forward to an exciting period ahead.
