India Women Hockey Team Clinches Fifth Place with Impressive Win Against Germany
In a thrilling match at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen, the Indian women’s hockey team made a remarkable comeback in the second half to defeat Germany 3-1, securing fifth place at the 2026 Women’s Hockey World Cup on Thursday. This achievement marks India’s best performance in the tournament since they finished fourth in the very first World Cup back in 1974.
Entering the fifth-place playoff, India was in high spirits after losing only one match throughout the tournament. However, the first half turned out to be challenging as Germany dominated and limited India’s chances to attack.
Reflecting on the team’s performance, midfielder Neha expressed pride in their fifth-place finish, stating, “This is a great achievement for us. Although we aimed for the semi-finals and finals, we are pleased with finishing fifth.” She also highlighted that the upcoming Asian Games will be a significant challenge as they prepare for the Olympics.
The match kicked off with both teams exchanging strong defensive plays, while India focused on counter-attacking. Captain Salima Tete attempted to penetrate the German defense, but Germany began to assert their dominance, forcing turnovers and applying pressure on the Indian backline.
As the first quarter came to a close, Germany earned a penalty corner, but Indian goalkeeper Bichu Devi made a crucial save, preserving the scoreline. The second quarter continued in a similar vein, with Germany holding most of the possession, but India managed to break through later on. Notably, Navneet Kaur and Salima Tete tested the German goalkeeper with some solid attempts, but the score remained deadlocked.
The game turned dramatically after the halftime break. India emerged with renewed energy and quickly found gaps in Germany’s defense. Just minutes into the second half, Ishika Chaudhary shone with a fantastic individual play, scoring the first goal with a beautiful reverse-lift shot that beat the German keeper, putting India ahead.
India didn’t stop there. Just two minutes later, they capitalized on a penalty corner, and Navneet Kaur scored another goal, extending the lead to 2-0 in quick succession. The Indian side now looked confident and in control of the match.
As the final quarter began, India kept the pressure on. Only two minutes after the restart, Navneet showcased her skills again, skillfully maneuvering around the goalkeeper to lift another goal into the net, making it 3-0.
Germany, however, did not give up. They ramped up their efforts and managed to score in the 59th minute through Lynn Krings, who converted a rebound after a series of saves by goalkeeper Savita Punia. Although Germany attempted to find an equalizer with another penalty corner just before the final whistle, India’s defense held strong to secure the 3-1 victory.
With this impressive second-half performance, the Indian women’s hockey team not only capped off the World Cup on a high note but also gained valuable confidence as they head into the Asian Games.
