Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz Spark Magic in Mixed Doubles at the US Open
In a delightful surprise for tennis fans, Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz teamed up for the US Open Mixed Doubles Championship, creating an electrifying atmosphere despite playing together for just two matches.
After stepping away from tennis following an emotional farewell in 2022, the 44-year-old Williams returned to the iconic Arthur Ashe Stadium, showcasing that her skills—powerful serves, lightning-fast reflexes, and fierce competitiveness—remain intact. Beside her was Alcaraz, a rising star in the sport.
Their partnership became one of the main attractions of the revamped mixed doubles event at the US Open. The pair shared laughter and smiles while advancing through their first match, ultimately reaching the quarter-finals.
In their opening match against Erin Routliffe and Lloyd Glasspool, the excitement of the New York crowd was palpable. Williams dazzled with her powerful serves and aggressive returns, reminding everyone of her legendary status. Alcaraz’s energy was infectious as he demonstrated his own impressive athleticism, often reacting to Williams’ incredible shots with awe.
Although they won their first match with a score of 5-3, 4-1, the outcome seemed less important than the moment itself. Williams’ return to such a grand event and Alcaraz’s comeback after a five-month injury absence created a special experience for both players and fans alike.
After the match, Alcaraz admitted he felt nervous on the court, especially having not played competitively for a while. “I double-faulted the first point, so it was really nerve-wracking,” he shared. He expressed gratitude to Williams for making his return smoother, saying, “She made everything easier. I just wanted to enjoy the experience.”
Williams echoed his sentiments, adding that playing with Alcaraz was a joy. “It’s just fun to be out here again. Playing with Carlos is so cool,” she said, highlighting the spirit of enjoyment they both shared.
Their chemistry on the court transformed the mixed doubles into a highlight of the tournament. The US Open’s new format, introduced in 2025, placed higher-profile players in the mixed doubles spotlight and received enthusiastic support from fans, even as some traditional doubles players voiced concerns.
Their journey, however, ended in the quarter-finals, where they were defeated by Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli. Though their time together was brief, Williams and Alcaraz captivated audiences and created memorable moments that will resonate long after the tournament.
For that brief moment at Arthur Ashe, Williams returned to the spotlight, showcasing her timeless skills, while Alcaraz stood proudly beside her, soaking in the excitement of the event. The crowd’s appreciation for their performance was unmistakable, proving that while their partnership may have been short-lived, it left a lasting impression.
