India Urges UN to Avoid Legitimizing Terrorism Amid Global Political Changes

New Delhi: On August 20, India asserted that being a member of the UN Security Council should not enable any nation to “legitimize” terrorist groups. This statement comes as various diplomatic and political events unfolded involving India, its neighboring countries, and others around the world.

During a discussion at the United Nations, India emphasized that the Security Council should not use its platform to lift sanctions on terrorists or to blacklist entities based solely on political motives. The government stressed that the council must not become a battleground for narrow interests.

Across the globe in Singapore, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong engaged with visiting Indian ministers. They reviewed advancements in their bilateral relationship, focusing on areas like manufacturing, digital technology, sustainability, and connectivity, ahead of the fourth India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable.

In Bangladesh, the Foreign Affairs Adviser, Humaiun Kobir, shared that the chances of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman visiting India for the upcoming BRICS Summit next month appear slim unless a foundation of “mutual trust” is established and a respectable invitation is extended from New Delhi. Interestingly, Bangladesh also held its presidential election on the same day, with lawmakers voting for the country’s 23rd president—marking the first contested election for the position in 35 years, where BNP’s Mirza Alamgir is leading.

In Washington, Indian Ambassador Vinay Mohan Kwatra met U.S. Assistant Secretary of State S. Paul Kapur to discuss various aspects of their partnership. Additionally, the UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed is expected to visit India later this month for talks on collaboration and India’s role in promoting sustainable development.

Meanwhile, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy initiated a 10-day tour of the UK and the US. In the USA, a religious freedom advisory group has proposed sanctions against the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, urging the government not to engage in high-level discussions with its leaders.

In Israel, an unfortunate incident resulted in the death of an Indian national, and authorities have detained a suspect as they continue to investigate the matter.

In recent news from China, a court imposed a life sentence on Xu Jiayin, the former head of the Evergrande Group, and confiscated all his personal assets for multiple crimes.

In Pakistan, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb announced that the country is seeking a $10 billion financial package from the US to bolster its foreign exchange reserves and rebuild confidence among international investors, aiming to decrease its reliance on emergency funding from other nations.

Overall, significant developments across various nations are shaping the geopolitical landscape, particularly concerning India and its relationships in the region.
