Marcus Rashford Gets No. 9 Shirt at Manchester United Amid Uncertain Future
Marcus Rashford has officially been given the No. 9 shirt by Manchester United after his return to the club. However, his long-term future at Old Trafford remains up in the air. The England international has not yet secured his place in the team’s lineup beyond the summer transfer window.
Rashford wore the No. 9 jersey during a recent friendly match against AC Milan, which was his first appearance for the club since December 2024. Initially, the club described this jersey number as temporary, but it has now been permanently registered with the Premier League. Manager Michael Carrick has praised Rashford’s positive attitude and strong performances since his return, and the 28-year-old is currently a key part of the team.
“He’s a very talented player,” Carrick stated. “In a career that lasts 10 or 15 years, there will be ups and downs, and that doesn’t define a player as a whole. What matters is how they perform over time. Right now, we’re in a good space as a team, and Marcus has a lot to offer us. He’s trained really well since he came back.”
The No. 9 shirt became available after Rasmus Hojlund moved to Napoli. Rashford had previously worn the No. 10 shirt before a loan period at Aston Villa and Barcelona. That number is now taken by new signing Matheus Cunha.
Hojlund took the No. 9 shirt after Anthony Martial departed from United in 2024. However, the Danish striker’s time with the number was short-lived, as new manager Ruben Amorim quickly adjusted his plans.
With this latest development, Rashford joins an iconic list of past players who have donned the No. 9 shirt, including legends like Andy Cole, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Dimitar Berbatov. Sir Bobby Charlton, another Manchester United legend, also wore the No. 9 during his illustrious career.
Even with the uncertainty ahead, Rashford still has two years remaining on his contract with the club, reportedly earning £325,000 per week.
