Emma Raducanu’s Injury Woes Continue
Emma Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, has faced yet another setback in her career. She has been ruled out of this year’s US Open due to a stress fracture in her lower right leg. This injury will also keep her from competing in other major events in North America, including the Cincinnati Open. Additionally, she will not be part of Great Britain’s team for the Billie Jean King Cup Finals as she focuses on her recovery.
Raducanu last played in June, where she was the runner-up at the HSBC Championships at Queen’s Club. This performance was seen as a strong comeback for her, reminding fans of her extraordinary win at the US Open five years ago.
However, her busy schedule during the grass-court season worsened an injury that began bothering her during the clay season. Medical scans revealed a Grade 4 stress fracture, leading to her absence from key tournaments like Wimbledon and the Canadian Open. Doctors have recommended she take a break for 8 to 16 weeks to recover fully.
This recent injury adds to a list of challenges Raducanu has faced since her remarkable Grand Slam victory. After becoming the first qualifier in the Open Era to win a Grand Slam at the US Open, she has dealt with several physical issues, including wrist and ankle surgeries and recurring health problems. These setbacks have hindered her ability to maintain consistent performance, despite glimpses of her incredible talent.
Before her injury, there were promising signs of a return to form for Raducanu. Her runner-up finish at Queen’s Club marked only her second WTA Tour final, following another second-place finish earlier in the season in Cluj-Napoca. These results suggested she was on the right track to reclaim her status as one of women’s tennis’s brightest stars.
Raducanu’s absence from the Billie Jean King Cup further emphasizes the seriousness of her situation. Katie Boulter is set to lead the Great Britain squad in China. Missing the US Open is particularly hard for Raducanu, as she won this title as an 18-year-old qualifier without dropping a single set—one of the most remarkable achievements in tennis history.
For now, Raducanu’s focus will be on healing rather than competing. With her extended time away from the court, she hopes to finally overcome the injury challenges that have overshadowed much of her career since that impressive breakthrough.
