India Shines in Commonwealth Games: Kajur and Shot Putters Make Finals

India had an exciting day at the Commonwealth Games on Wednesday, with sprinter Animesh Kujur making his mark in the men’s 200m and both Tajinderpal Singh Toor and Samardeep Singh Gill qualifying for the shot put final.

After a tough day for Gurindervir Singh, who did not perform as expected in the men’s 100m earlier in the Games, 23-year-old Kujur stepped up to deliver an impressive performance. He clocked a personal best of 20.46 seconds in Round 1 of the 200m, finishing first in Heat 4. His effort placed him seventh overall among all the heats, securing his spot in the semi-finals and keeping the hopes of Indian sprinting alive.

Kujur’s progress in the last year has been remarkable, and he demonstrated great composure against tough competitors, heading into the semi-finals with newfound confidence.

Toor Leads India in Shot Put Success

India also celebrated a significant achievement in the men’s shot put, with both Toor and Gill moving forward. National record holder Tajinderpal Singh Toor automatically qualified after hitting the 20m mark with his second throw. He began with a throw of 19.93m but improved to 20.14m, easily surpassing the qualifying standard. His effort was the second-best of the day, just behind Tom Walsh of New Zealand, who topped the qualification with a throw of 21.03m.

Samardeep Singh Gill also made it through to the finals, finishing among the top 12, despite narrowly missing the automatic qualifying mark. His best throw of 19.95m placed him fifth overall, showcasing his talent and potential.

With Kujur continuing to push forward in sprinting and Toor and Gill ready for the shot put final, the Indian team is optimistic about turning these strong performances into medals in the upcoming events in Glasgow.
