Elon Musk’s Wealth Takes a Hit as Tesla Shares Plunge
Elon Musk saw a significant drop in his wealth, losing $18.6 billion on July 23 when Tesla’s stock fell by 14%. This marked the steepest decline for Tesla since June 5, 2025. According to the Forbes Billionaires List, Musk’s total net worth is now $731.7 billion. Despite this setback, he retains his title as the world’s richest person, ahead of Larry Page from Google, who has $263.8 billion, and Jeff Bezos from Amazon, with $245.4 billion.
This decline in Tesla’s stock follows Musk’s recent remark, “I can’t pass a TV without spotting a Tesla up in flames,” made in light of ongoing protests and vandalism at Tesla showrooms.
Why Did Elon Musk Lose $18.6 Billion in One Day?
Tesla’s stock took a hit after the company released its quarterly results, which fell short of profit expectations, even though revenue figures were higher than anticipated. The automaker reported earnings of 33 cents per share, significantly less than the expected 55 cents, despite achieving $28.2 billion in revenue—above analysts’ expectations of $27.2 billion.
According to a Forbes report, investor concerns arose from the disappointing profits and Tesla’s plans for heavy spending on artificial intelligence (AI).
Tesla’s Plans for Increased AI Investment
During the earnings call, Tesla’s Chief Financial Officer, Vaibhav Taneja, mentioned that the company plans to invest $25 billion this year, with even more anticipated in the future. This funding is aimed at advancing Tesla’s AI projects, including the Optimus humanoid robot and a robotaxi service.
However, some analysts noted that investors are looking for actual progress instead of just promises. Morgan Stanley analysts described the spending as “necessary” but stressed the need for Tesla to show “tangible” advancements in its robotaxi and Optimus initiatives. Canaccord Genuity analysts added that they expect meaningful robotaxi deployments in the coming months as Tesla enhances its AI strategy.
Elon Musk Addresses Merger Speculation
During the same earnings call, Musk was asked about rumors regarding a possible merger between Tesla and SpaceX. He chose not to comment on that possibility, stating such discussions are not suitable for an earnings call. However, he did mention that there is increasing overlap between the two companies, especially with Starlink connectivity in Cybertrucks and a proposed joint venture for AI chip manufacturing.
As Musk navigates these challenges, the focus will be on how Tesla addresses investor concerns while striving to maintain its lead in innovation and technology.
