UEFA Chief Aleksander Ceferin Shuns World Cup Final in FIFA Protest Over Balogun Controversy

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin Boycotts FIFA World Cup Final Over Controversy

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin chose not to attend the FIFA World Cup final in New York as a protest against FIFA’s decision regarding Folarin Balogun’s suspension, according to a report from The Times.

Tensions between UEFA and FIFA have been rising, particularly due to issues surrounding the Balogun situation. The American forward was shown a red card for a questionable tackle on Tarik Muharemovic during a 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32. Normally, this would lead to an automatic one-match ban, meaning Balogun should have missed the following knockout game against Belgium.

Instead, FIFA decided to delay the ban for a year, which meant Balogun was eligible to play. This unexpected ruling came after U.S. President Donald Trump mentioned he had discussed the incident with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, arguing that Balogun’s red card was unwarranted. Trump stated, “I didn’t think it was a foul,” while clarifying that he didn’t instruct Infantino on how to act.

FIFA officially announced this decision on July 5, stating that if Balogun commits any similar offenses during the probationary period, the ban will be enforced without regard for any further penalties.

Belgium’s appeal against this decision was dismissed, leading to backlash from players and analysts alike.

UEFA’s Strong Response

In a powerful statement, UEFA criticized FIFA for jeopardizing the tournament’s integrity. They emphasized that sports operate on rules that ensure fair gameplay and transparency, arguing that a mandatory ban should not be ignored during a tournament. UEFA labeled FIFA’s decision “unprecedented, incomprehensible, and unjustifiable,” warning that it undermines the game’s credibility.

Ceferin’s Decision to Boycott

Ceferin’s absence from the World Cup final stemmed not just from the Balogun issue but from worsening relations between UEFA and FIFA over various topics. He was particularly displeased with the U.S. refusing entry to Somali referee Omar Artan, who will officiate the UEFA Super Cup final in August. Other points of contention included FIFA’s management of Iran, hydration breaks, an extended half-time for the final, and dynamic ticket pricing.

While Ceferin attended the opening match between Mexico and South Africa, his absence at the final reflects the increasing strain between UEFA and FIFA, particularly following one of the tournament’s disputes.
