USA Investigates UNRWA Employees Over Terrorism Links

U.S. officials are currently looking into allegations that employees of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which supports Palestinian refugees, have connections to terrorist organizations. Over 1,500 staff members are under scrutiny for suspected ties to terrorism.

This investigation comes as U.S. officials have increasingly urged member countries of the United Nations to cut funding to UNRWA. Concerns include educational materials that might promote violence, reports of Hamas activities underneath UNRWA schools, and claims that some employees were involved in terrorist attacks on October 7 against Israel.

USAID Investigation Underway

The investigation by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is examining the backgrounds of these employees, with findings suggesting that 108 current or former staff members have been referred to the State Department for possible removal from positions associated with U.S. funding. Some of these individuals were identified as participants in the Hamas invasion into southern Israel or linked to terrorist groups.

A diplomatic source confirmed that around 1,500 UNRWA employees are being investigated for possible connections to terrorist organizations in Gaza. The USAID Inspector General is determined to exclude such individuals from U.S. funding programs.

UNRWA’s Own Investigation

Earlier, the United Nations conducted its own investigation into UNRWA staff following reports that some had taken part in the October 7 attacks. This inquiry found insufficient evidence against ten employees, while contracts for nine others were terminated.

U.S. investigations are said to go beyond the scope of the UN findings, focusing on preventing any taxpayer money from supporting individuals linked to terrorism. This step is viewed as essential to stop terrorists from infiltrating humanitarian organizations that receive U.S. support.

Serious Allegations Against Staff

Some of the individuals under investigation include school officials with connections to Hamas operations, suggesting a deepening issue within UNRWA. For instance, there are reports of a teacher involved in Hamas activities and individuals linked to military operations under Hamas.

Additionally, it has been suggested that some staff members were involved in planning or carrying out actions during the October 7 attacks, including transporting weapons.

U.S. Government Response

The U.S. government is taking these reports seriously, stating that there cannot be organizations running aid programs while also having ties to terrorism. This duality threatens the efforts to create a safe environment for the people in Gaza.

Discussions around UNRWA’s role will continue as U.S. officials are actively pursuing solutions to transition critical services while ensuring security and humanitarian support aren’t compromised.

In a meeting about UNRWA funding, U.S. representatives emphasized the need to sever ties with organizations compromised by terrorism to secure a better future for the Palestinian people.

UN Aid Operations Under Threat

Recent events in Gaza have highlighted continued conflicts affecting humanitarian operations. The U.N.’s Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East expressed concerns about armed groups interfering with aid distribution, indicating that this trend threatens the safety of operations aimed at delivering much-needed supplies to those in need.

With ongoing investigations and rising tensions, the future of UNRWA and humanitarian efforts in Gaza hangs in the balance as the world watches for further developments.
