Hunger Strike for Education Reforms: Sonam Wangchuk’s Brave Stand

Sonam Wangchuk, a well-known engineer and education activist, has been on a hunger strike in New Delhi for 16 days, advocating for reforms in India’s education system. Despite appearing frail, he expressed his determination: “I may be weak on the outside, but I am strong on the inside.”

Recent health updates show that Wangchuk has lost over 8 kg (about 18 pounds) and is experiencing low blood sugar and blood pressure. Concern is growing among his supporters, many of whom are urging him to end his fast for the sake of his health. However, at 59 years old, Wangchuk insists he must continue until he achieves his goals.

The protests are taking place at Jantar Mantar, a historic site known for activism. They are spearheaded by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a satirical movement that demands the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan after a medical entrance exam was canceled due to a paper leak.

CJP’s founder, Abhijeet Dipke, stated that Pradhan should be held accountable for the incident. In response, Pradhan has dismissed their demands, claiming they lack faith in the country’s progress. Wangchuk, who began his hunger strike on June 29, sees himself as a follower of Mahatma Gandhi and is committed to non-violent protest to invoke change.

Wangchuk, often referred to as “Sonam sir,” is celebrated in India and beyond for his innovative work in education and climate adaptation. He developed the “ice stupa,” a method that creates artificial glaciers to help conserve water. Wangchuk’s contributions earned him several prestigious awards, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award, and his story was an inspiration for the hit film “Three Idiots.”

Last year, he faced arrest and spent 170 days in prison due to protests before being released without charges. Despite extreme summer heat, hundreds of supporters have gathered at Jantar Mantar, showing solidarity with Wangchuk and the CJP.

Dipke reported Wangchuk’s worsening condition, noting he struggles to stand or walk. Medical advice suggests he should stop his hunger strike, but Wangchuk remains resolute, insisting that he will not stop until the education system is held accountable.

Many supporters at the protest are voicing their concerns for Wangchuk’s health. An engineer from Hyderabad, Animesh Sahu, shared his emotional connection to Wangchuk’s cause, urging the government to pay attention. Farmers and educators, like Satyaprakash Bharadwaj and Prof. Nandita Narain, echoed this sentiment, expressing sadness over the need for such drastic measures and emphasizing the importance of Wangchuk’s health for the movement’s continuation.

Despite numerous visits from MPs and activists, no one from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has engaged with the protesters. In response, Dipke announced plans for a march to parliament on July 20 to demand action and accountability.

As the hunger strike continues, the protesters seek the government’s attention and a chance for dialogue, emphasizing the urgent need for reform in India’s education system.
