Pixel-Flo Secures £5.25 Million Funding to Revolutionize MicroLED Displays
Pixel-Flo, a startup spun out from the University of Sheffield, has successfully raised £5.25 million in a seed funding round. The round was led by Northern Gritstone and also received backing from SCVC, the Parkwalk Northern Universities Venture Fund, and HTGF.
The company is focused on tackling key challenges in the production of microLED displays, which are being hailed as the next big thing in display technology. MicroLEDs promise to deliver brightness levels that are two to five times higher and energy efficiency that is two to four times greater than current display technologies.
Despite their potential, the widespread use of microLEDs is currently hindered by the difficulties involved in scaling up mechanical mass transfer methods. Pixel-Flo claims its innovative technology can streamline this process by offering high throughput at lower costs for both processing and materials. This could pave the way for affordable microLED devices, ranging from smartwatches to televisions.
The recent funding round, which was oversubscribed and included £2.5 million from Northern Gritstone, will help Pixel-Flo move from lab testing to larger-scale production. The funding will also allow the company to grow its team and relocate to new laboratory and office facilities.
Rick Smith, CEO and Co-founder of Pixel-Flo, expressed enthusiasm about the investment. “This funding enables us to expand our team and showcase our unique technology through commercial coating systems,” he noted. “We’re excited to partner with display manufacturers to evaluate our solutions.”
Smith also highlighted the importance of their international consortium of investors, stating, “We’re proud to have the support of Northern Gritstone as we aim for significant new opportunities in the microLED market.”
